Drug field testing

Migrated topic.

I was recently arrested for possession of cocain because of a field test saying that was what i had but i know for a fact there was no cocaine in that powder what would have are there alkoliods that DMT shares with cocaine what would cause it to field test positive has anybody else ever heard of this happening befor if anybody has anyinformation on this subject please post it would be very helpful

well it depends on the test. if it was a very general test it may have just tested positive for alkaloids and they assumed was cocaine. i think to be admissable in court they need a secondary test to prove it though, infact im almost positive about that ask your lawyer if you need one. i dont know too much about field tests police use but id image its rather crude.

by the way sorry for the bad news getting busted sucks :(

So do they just test for the pressence of alkoloids or are there some specific alkoliods they they have in commen

Any reasonable chemist could argue against any field test like this. Its truly ridiculous to assume that a test done out in the field could be used in court to prove that you had a single chemical compound as complicated as a tropane alkaloid in hand. Without GC/MS, NMR or the like, any analytical chemist could probably come up with some way of beating a colorimetric test.

Hoff1943,

I'm really sorry to hear of your misfortune. Please, get a laywer, preferably one that deals with drug cases..
