Extracting San Pedro with basic methanol?

Brain's getting some more cacti next week and he is wondering if he can extract it using a methanol/NaOH solution. He has heard, from quite a few people, that prolonged exposure to NaOH degrades mescaline. So is that going to be a problem?

In theory, this could work. Mesc base is soluble in Methanol.

quite a few people would be wrong

wont be a problem, but what are you going to do to get your mesc from the basic alcohol?

Distill off most of the methanol.
Acidify with HCl.
Wash with acetone.
Dry.

i think you'll end up with a salty product, lye plus hcl....

What if he acidifies with acetic acid(produces sodium acetate), dries the neutralised stuff, then washes it with cold MEK to remove non mescaline alkaloids? Good way to get mescaline acetate?

mek wash probably wont be terribly effective, i'd distill off the methanol, make sure its basic to 13 or so and pull with nps.
nice way to reduce nps use in an extraction imo, but have never tried it

then carefully salt it out in what ever form you want
careful titration during salting yields a much nicer produt
