First extraction questions

I've been reading up on teks and especially the DMT Extraction Overview sticky have proven very useful in understanding the process.
I'm a bit of a "noob" when it comes to practical things like this so i like to write the process in my own words and check with you guys if this is the way to extract dmt.

So here's my version of what is supposed to happen in a dmt extraction. Excuse my clumsyness.



1. Slowly add 50gram of lye to 750 ml water and stir in the mixing jar with a rubber spatula.

2. Add 50g powdered MHRB , close the cap and shake the jar. Then let it sit for 1 hour.

3. Add 50 ml naphta (wasbenzine) and carefully mix it by rolling it in the jar to prevent emulsion.Wait for the naphta to float on top then use a pippette to siphon
the nafta and put it in a seperate jar.

4. Keep doing this until you have 4 jars of naphta/dmt. Then place them in the cooler and freeze it. (How much ml do my jars have to be for these 50ml pulls? And do they have
to be airtight?)

5. I can not visualize the next part but once the dmt has been precipitated you simply pour the naphta trough a coffee filter and you should have material dmt
in the jars, or coffee filters?

The recrystallization part i'm not sure i understand either, i'll try to formulate what i think happens.

6. For recrystallization we take about 10-15 ml of solvent for 0.5g dmt. And put them in 2 seperate glasses.
Heat a pan with hot water and then let the glass containers sit in the water. Use an eye-dropper to slowly add solvent into the dmt jar
untill the dmt has dissolved and then turn off the heat and gradually cool then put it in the fridge, then in the freezer to precepitate the dmt.



My request to you is to spot anything that is wrong or needs to improvement. Also, i have some questions regarding the naphta pulls. How much time do i need to use for
each pull? If it matters at all. Do i leave the jar in heated water on every pull, or just the last one?

How cold does the freezer need to be?

And for the recrystallization process I only have a gass furnace , how dangerous is it to use this? I'm pretty sure the flames won't touch the naphta but I woulden't want to have an
accidant as i'll be doing this in my parents home and i don't want to scare them.

All basically right, SWIM used wasbenzine as well, you can combine all your pulls into one. However it would be better then to evaporate off the pulls before placing them in the freezer.

This increases the concentration of the solvent, making freeze precip easier. Don't worry you will not evap off any DMT.

You can evap off each pull, or combine and then evap. SWIM combined the pulls into a glass baking tray and then evaporated off a 3rd of the solvent before putting in the freezer.

Wasbenzine is difficult to evap, better to use a glass baking tray to increase the surface area and let stand. Put it on a level surface and then let stand for a couple of hours, mark the level so you can see how much has evaporated. Left in a jar it takes ages to evap.

After being in the freezer the solvent is still liquid but the DMT is now solid instead of in solution. The DMT will be mostly stuck to the container. Prepare something to pour off into with the coffee filter on and just pour the solvent away. You can then let this solvent stand and evap off to catch any remaining DMT.

TBH if you have evaporated the solvent enough in the first place and your freezer is cold enough there will not be that much DMT floating in the solvent.

The vast majority is left in the container, the filter is there to catch any floaters.

A baking tray works better for collection as you can just use something with a sharp edge to scape off the crystals. A jar is difficult to get your hand in to scape off the spice. Just remember to wrap the tray in plastic wrap a few times to stop your freezer from smelling. SWIM wrapped it 3-4 times and had no smell issues.

If you have nice clean pulls and the spice looks clean enough a recrystallization may not be needed. Check out the pictures here and here from SWIM's first attempt. recrystallization cleans the product but you will lose some yield. SWIM thought that they would need to do this but in the end it wasn't needed.

You can see the baking tray in the second link and some nice spice that didn't need cleaning up.

Other answers.

SWIM used 50ml solvent for 55 grams of MHRB this seems about right to many people. to much solvent and the freeze precip will be difficult too little and it is difficult to separate from the base solution.

Freezer the colder the better! The warmer a liquid is the more it can hold in solution (try dissolving 4 spoons of sugar in hot coffee and cold coffee and you will see what we mean)

As I said recrystallization may not be needed, see how clean it is, post a picture on here and people will let you know. Why do it when you could have some nice spice after the freeze precip?

Thank you Awakened. Yes i have been watching that thread and read it numerous times. It is very helpful. I'm amazed how clean those pictures look and I hope to see the same result. And you had really good practical tips that will serve a lot in SWIM's attempt in extracting DMT.

I'll let my friend SWIM use this method and evap 1/3 of the solvent before freezing. If i understand it correctly he is supposed to collect naptha in closed jars and then combine these in a baking tray or something with a large glass surface area to speed up evaporation. Afterwards is it okay to pour it into a bigger jar and close it airtight and put it in the freezer?

I'm not familiair with baking trays i don't know if it has a lid on it, or if it is even neccesary. Or is the plastic wrap enough to keep SWIM's freezer free from naphta?

A glass baking tray.

I heard from SWIM that they just poured the results of each pull into the baking tray and let it stand and did the next pull right after, poured that in, repeated until all 4 pulls were done.

Let the tray stand for a couple of hours, then placed the tray wrapped in plastic wrap in the freezer.

You can put the solvent into any container and place in the freezer.

Not sure about having it air tight as a must for the process, it is rather to stop your freezer smelling of solvent. Others can correct me if i am wrong. Air tight container or not is not something that will harm the freeze precip.

Don't get too hung up on what you are pouring into etc. Apart from making sure they are solvent safe, you can evap off some of the solvent quickly, it fits in the freezer and you can collect the spice easily afterwards.

SWIM used plastic wrap, and made sure it was air tight as can be. Obviously a jar (like a jam jar) with lid will ensure that fumes will not escape if the smell is an issue. Just that SWIM used a jam jar but then found it hard to scape off the DMT, large hands you see.... :d

Turns out that SWIM already bought himself a bunch of tiny mason jars. Which is smart, imo. If he won't use them for this process in the future, atleast he can store food in the jars.

I don't think there's going to be any issues with scraping off dmt. The mason jars are wide-mouth and SWIM has little soft girly hands anyway. I always tease him about it.

Btw, not my own freezer. Better safe than sorry. I'll post here if SWIM needs help during the process.

Hey i have a questions that might be considered silly..

It says on noman's tek that one should shake the naphta , let it float on top and then repeat it 3 more times.

"4) Now add to the mixing jar 1 ml of naptha for each 15 ml of water used to create the lye solution. Turn the jar end-over-end. Do not shake or splash (or there will be a tendency for the solution to form an unwanted emulsion); simply roll the naptha around in the root-bark-powder-solution to mix it. Gently do this for one minute, and then let the jar stand until the naptha has mostly separated and is floating on top. Then repeat this agitation process three more times."

This. I do not understand. I thought i was supposed to mix it thorougly, then let the naphta float on top in order to seperate. But according to this step i'm supposed to mix it again 3 times. Can someone tell me if this is the case and possibly explain me why we do this?

You just roll the naptha around, end over end, for about an hour each pull. You pull 3-5 times or until the naptha stops changing colors.
