floating spice...

Migrated topic.

swim has done quite a few extractions now , seems to encounter an obstacle everytime, floating crystals seem to be the most obvious one ! currently swim has a (pyrex) sealed bowl full of solvent in which there is much extract free floating, and has previously had large gobs of extract form and not stick to the base but be floating at the bottom, swim is not sure if he imagines such things but thought he once read pyrex was undesirable, is there any information on this point? no matter how long he leaves his stuff in the freezer it is still free floating and using a coffee filter on the afformentioned sticky gob resulted in the majority of his extract melting into a coffee filter and just being one sticky golden mass in a coffee filter... multiple searches have shed little light on this issue other than the advice of using a coffee filter and then scraping off the extract.

and back to A/B swim goes, hoping it will resolve this impass...

In this situation I would decant as much solvent as possible and suck off remaining solvent with a pipette or syringe. Let any residual spice laden solvent evaporate off.

I almost always have "floaties" (my affectionate term for them!) They tend to be whiter and fluffier than the crystals that stick to the pyrex. In my last extraction (with Shayku), we had 300g of powdered MHRB and a final yield of 3.7g, including 850mg from floaties alone!!

I always use a coffee filter and never have trouble with any of the floaties sticking to the filter. Maybe your room is to hot? Maybe there is water (condensation?) in your naptha? Do you take the filter out of the funnel to let it dry (perhaps the naptha below is evapping and condensing on the filter, preventing quick evaporation from the paper)?

Try a light fan over the outside of the paper filter (not too strong or it'll blow the filter around and you'll lose the spice inside) - more to have an airflow around the filter than to have a direct source of air. Failing that, you can always re-x, as Endlessness has wisely pointed out 😉 .

Hope this helps,
