fractional distillation of nndmt

Migrated topic.

I searched the site and it seems there's no discussion on the process of extracting dmt via fractional distillation using a common apparatus with fractional column. Is this not possible for some reason?

Not sure where to post this as I'm limited and a newember still but have a few years of acid base extractions of mhrb and hobby organic chemistry for the past 9 years

I'd suggest you'd need to be confident with vacuum distillation/sublimation in order to give this a try. Even that is questionable if you think about the stages of the procedure. Distillation of DMT freebase from an aqueous alkaline plant matrix would present some problems.

∘ the boiling point of DMT is higher than that of water (would steam distillation work?)
∘ DMT would solidify in the condenser unless you use hot water (~60-80°C)
∘ the plant matrix would be vulnerable to charring and
∘ especially if using reduced pressure, the bumping would be terrible
∘ alkaline solutions will attack glassware, especially at elevated temperature
∘ at this stage, the idea of an entrainer for co-distillation comes up (cyclohexanol was reported to work but you might not have access there yet.)
∘ at this stage it might start looking like solvent extraction is a load easier.

Adding base to the moist plant material, drying, then sublimating in a hard vacuum may or may not work. It would be an elegant solventless method if it did.

By all means try any of this - and be sure to report failures too - but also have a good think about whether each stage introduces any unnecessary complications.
