Grafting mature williamsii var. caespitosa

Migrated topic.

Would it be possible to graft a mature cluster (6-7 years old) onto a trichocereus?

I have some inactive fast growing trichocereus cacti which I want to use to graft a mature caespitosa on.

The idea is to cut the cluster at root level and then follow the regular graft procedure. From what I read here, usually grafts are done with pups.

Although I have quite some clusters, I would be a shame to waste one if it is not possible at all or chances of success are minimal.

Has anyone experience here grafting mature cacti?

Should work. Just leave enough on the cluster so that if it does not take the first time you can shave some off each end and try again. You should know within about a week if it took or not. Just keep an eye on it.

Thanks Mitakuye.

Decided to come in action immediately

Fingers crossed......

(excuse me for the wrong position of the photos)

One of my trich clusters attracts snails. They don't do damage to the cactus and keep my vegetables in the greenhouse safe. Those snails have taste.. thats for sure

For 1 it already failed. I saw the dreaded orange rot color come up. The other one still seems to be fine.
