I thoroughly enjoyed growing my Xanthoria lichen, so I thought it would be a lovely idea to post this fascinating lichen cultivation website:

Lichen Lovers

Maybe if anyone would like to post their lichen grow logs here, as I would really love to see everyones pictures of their lichens growing...

Wow! I love that!

Where do you keep the lichen? (window? Under a grow light? Outside?)
How well established was it when you got it? and how much have it grown?
Can you make a pictorial?

More pictures please! Lichens are my favorite plants, they look so alien=)

Gone-and-Back

My particular lichen doesn't seem to be listed as a psychoactive lichen: Human Uses Of Lichens. Though it is very difficult to say with absolute certainty as to whether it is psychoactive as there has been so little research into the psychoactive properties of lichens.

I am an avid grower and cultivator and my sole reason for growing this Xanthoria lichen was to try and grow something I had never grown before and hopefully to be able to gain some knowledge and insight into growing theses truly incredible symbiotic organisms.

Why thank you for your more than kind words. I have a keen fascination with the otherworldly appearance of lichen and with the unique way in which they function. I was growing my lichen outside within a terrarium in dappled sunlight. When I found my lichen in the garden he was less than half the size, I managed to establish him perfectly on his rock and he was completely content. Sadly when I moved I had to return him back into the garden as I didn't want to stress the little guy out.

I would love to grow another lichen really soon as they are truly a joy to grow, I will make sure to make a pictorial of my next lichen that I grow.

I used plain maas which is a local product very similar to plain Greek yogurt and I added some kelp from a beach in my neighborhood, I brought the mixture to the boil while stirring it frequently. I made sure to removed the mixture from the heat as soon as it started to boil. Than I waited for it to cool down to room temperature, this is the formula that I painted onto my rock that I attached my lichen to.

It is very important to only use rain water and distilled water for watering your lichen as the chlorine in municipal water is poisonous to lichen. I wish you the best of luck if you do decide to grow your own lichen, I would be really keen to see your results.

How often did you water it? Spray bottle?
If I have time later this week I'll go lichen hunting in the woods=)

I would mist my lichen about once a week or so in the early morning or late evening though depending on weather conditions, when it was more dry I would mist it twice a week to make sure he was nice and moist. I'm so pleased thank you for the excellent news, you have truly made my day... Safe journeys and happy lichen hunting.
