Harvesting Heavenly Blue Morning Glories?

Great thread, I have some Grandpa Otts and some pink tricolors. Mostly Otts, so far I have collected 1 Cup of mature seeds. Interesting this is the first place I ever heard of eating the ripe pods. I have a late flowering vine that has just actually started blooming in another part of my yard. It struggled in the spring but I cleared some weeds away in eatly summer and it started vining like crazy. I think its' first flower only appeared 4 days ago and it is a 20' vine.

Have you tried the grandpa Ottis? If so how are they? I'm wondering because I'm interested in other morning glorie, especially the ones that grow around me and whether they contain sufficient alkaloids to have an effect, but they are the ones with tiny pink or white flowers. They're another with small blue flowers I've found, I've tried it, it has an effect, I think perhaps it's railroad vine, but I could be mistaken.

25 seeds likely won't do much for you... Then again, who knows what Burpee is packaging. I'd recommend buying your seeds from a dealer of viable seeds which are intended for ethnobotanical research and/or consumption. I'm not on STS, but some people there might have good seeds as well.

The 25 seeds were picked direct from my home grown vines which were in turn grown from my own 5th generation seeds. Some of them were originally Grandpa Otts but I haven't kept track of which seeds were which. So, definitely not 'Burpee'...

It wasn't the only thing in my system at that point so I was at least in a state of heightened suggestibility from the space paste I'd tested for breakfast. I would not say the effects were of anything other than a minimal intensity, but noticeable nonetheless. Shulgin +/- to just about + although if I'd remembered to take notes at the time I'd feel happier about giving a qualitative report.

There's a pack of 'Ethnobotanical grade' seeds knocking round my house somewhere or the other; they'll be going into pots as soon as spring starts showing its face again.

I had no idea that one could eat the fresh seeds before they became tough and black! My flowers are finally starting to turn into seed pods, but I am concerned that first frost will come soon and wipe most of them out before they can be stored for the winter. Good to know that the seeds are active before they dry up entirely.

Can the fresh seeds be stored in the same way as the hardened seeds? So far I'm storing them in a plastic bag and placing them in a drawer with other various plant seeds.

Negative. I tried storing some fresh seeds just before frost last year but to no success. They rotted quite fast but late harvest often results in this, anyways. Harvest earlier and you'll be able to store much more stabler seeds. :thumb_up:

Sorry Mister Quicksilver! That's what happens when I type stuff off the top of my head (and at that point it was easier to type "CH" than to go back and look). Sleep deprivation plays tricks with recall (IIRC ) and CH had posted quite a bit in this thread too .

Ripe seeds also should be dried thoroughly in a sterile environment after being wiped briefly with alcohol to prevent mold growth. The dark coating of a mature seed is hostile to mold growth and thus they do not need special care.

Grandpa Ott's are Ipomoea purpurea. I've never tried any of these different morning glory species aside from I. tricolor, but I've read some reports of people taking purpureas, and finding them active but hardly potent at all, or completely inactive.

There are likely a number of unexplored ergoline containing ipomoeas, this book Solanaceae and Convolvulaceae: Secondary Metabolites lists a number of unambiguously ergoline-positive ipomoea species, not viewable from google books

I guess I thought that the suggestion was to wipe the recently blackened seeds with rubbing alcohol, not the still-green-internally seed pods. But yeah, I guess I should clarify: I am storing the black (ripe) seeds in a cool, dark place, not the green unripe ones.

I have a feeling that even if I rub alcohol on the fresher, still-green seed pods, that the pods will still rot over the course of a few weeks since the seed pods at that point aren't in a form that's able to be stored long-term (the seed pods are full of water and there is little/no protective cover on the seed bodies).

There is some planning involved. With any entheogen.. especially if one is considering eating the fresh seeds. Unfortunately, if the seeds are soft and watery, they will rot sooner or later. But boy are they active upon harvest. It's best to utilize asap, ime.
