Hello I'm from germany so we don't have the same brands here. How can someone determine which naphtha is heavy and which is light? I bought petroleum, its's for cleaning and to get rid of rust. But I herad this is the heavy one and the lighter fuels are the light ones. Is there anything else where I can find out how heavy or light a naphtha is? Secondly I heard that lighter fuel doesn't contain naptha, so the first thesis confuses me. And what's about petroleum ether, I think this one is easy to get here in germany from pharmacies (and they are fucking suspiscious here, especialy if terror stuff is in the current news). Petroleum ether seems to be used as solvent too.

Ultimately, I had to accept that it was simply not possible (without going to extreme lengths to obtain the VM&P Naphtha here in uk. I ended up with Bartoline White Spirit (ok for freeze precipitation) and also Ronsonol Lighter fuel (for air evap). I found Petroleum Ether also, and whilst it contained certain quantities of petroleum spirit which would be classified as Naphtha, it also contained Benzene, a highly potent carcinogen.

Ok I found the lighter fuel it's 2,50 €/125ml it contains > 95% Naphta but it doesnt tell anything about the other 5%.

The petroleum is naptha, heavy. The datsheets tell different things but I remebmeber having read s.th. about xylene and benezene. But Ok all of them are solvents and not very healthy. But it seems to not evaporate very good (180-220 deg. cel.)
aromatic hydrocarbon >30%
aliphatic hydrocarbon >15-30%
but another source was like 90% and 10% so I'm not shure.
Question A) Ok so I better use the lighter fuel, are there big differences between the brands?
Question B) I read the Petroleum stuff seems to be good for defatting, so should I use it before basifying, or can I get harmful substances into my product which I'm not getting rid of later?
Question C) Whats about the Petroleum Ether it seems to be the one, which is most that what is written on the bootle. I mean with this naptha stuff you can't be shure what u got, because it just says oil. Acutally I feel with buying things in a hardware store like one of these crack junkies, who cook s.th. in an back alley

I resorted to using a heavy naphtha solvent after someone on here said it was ok for freeze precipitation. And you are correct, heavy naphtha evaporates vrey poor with regards to DMT extractions. I compared some Bartoline White Spirit (heavy naphtha) with some lighter fluid in a 'vap test'. The lighter fluid was gone in a few minutes, the heavy naphtha was there two hours later!
I am hoping it ok for freeze precipitations as i have been told.
Thanks, actualy this is the translation for pertroleum ether (=wundbenzin) (in Quest. C). Yeah I feel way more secure using that (because it's a pure version made for medical use), if the DMT dissolves similar good as in the naptha. I always think things like lighterfuel are not made to be very clean, ok you can do the evaporation test, but thta doesn't tell you anything about impurities which perhaps combine with the DMT (if that is even possible).ganjaman said:

In America the stuff to use would be Varnish Makers and Painters Naptha, VM&P Naptha for short. It's sold by quite a few companies under that label, and is designed to thin lacquers and paints as well as dissolve quickly and cleanly. If you cannot find anything marked as such in your hardware store, try searching the German art/wood finishing forums or a ask a local paint/art store, Janitorial supply or cabinet shop.
I used to use Kleen-Strip VM&P, but my local hardware chain stopped carrying it. All I had to do was stroll into a local cabinet makers' shop and ask what kind of clean-drying Naptha I should use to thin my "lacquer", and he handed me a gallon bucket for 5 bucks and change.
Naptha, by definition, is an impure mix of various petroleum products. You will never find "pure" naptha, but you can squirt it on some glass and wait for it to evaporate. If it doesn't leave anything behind, it won't leave anything in your final product.
