Hi wonderful people !

I am BubbleCat and I come here from a forum known to some members on here where we basically focus on gardening and trading of plants, which is good for the forum and members and makes it an awesome place. So I also want to be present here to learn more, especially about everything that comes after gardening

In terms of gardening I am mostly known for my "growing obsession": Papaveracea. But I do love all them plants, no matter if its Ibogas, Phalaris, Psychotria, vegetables and spices, Desmanthus, Mimosa ... you name it all of them lively greens find a wonderful home at my place.

I have always had a very widespread interest in everything, so thats how I became the jack of all trades ... and master of none I think of importance at this place is that I do know basic chemistry I have been doing lots of extractions some time ago, extract everything out of anything and isolate.

I guess this Forum can be great fun !

yes of course I do have advice on growing poppies of all kinds, and all the other plants I grow but for those theres others who are the real seas of wisdom. I never mind sharing, thats what knowledge is there for, so just drop a pm about a special question regarding anything or point me to the place where botanicals are discussed (must get some basic orientation here and I also believe I'm limited mostly to the research and welcome area for now) and I'll happily advise, especially on nearly all Papaver ssp, Eschscholzia, Argemone, Meconopsis ... and so on

But I must find a way to keep the digital waste I produce on low level, so I must either stick to SHaretheseeds.me when it comes to growing how to, experience and advice and point people there (reading there is unrestricted) since STS is more specifically discussing growing questions, or just copy the information here and produce lots digital waste in doing so.

Welcome, o feline of bubbles. I'm brand new to this fantastic forum as of today.
I am actually curious about a particular plant, wondering if you could help me understand how it may behave. It is known colloquially as reed canary grass.
It is one of the only plants known to contain some choice alkaloids that would grow outdoors in my climate and (as far as I know) the soil type in my area. Just wondering what you may know about this plant or may be able to discern from a quick internet search that I, with an unheralded genetic green thumb, cannot.

It would be good to know what USDA zone you are in and maybe you could find a soil map of your area or test your soil. Regardless: All Phalaris I've come across are very easy, infact my gardens grass is mooostly different phalaris ssp. that have established itself since the same applies to all other grass in the area. So yeah I did already pull from a loadtge mower carries ^^ wasnt good at all tho.

So for me its simple as tgat: I stop mowing a patch of grass and wait for the Phalaris to flower, thenI can ID and see if something interesting I do not have yet is in there, if so, I take it out with a generous amount of soil andother plants (a whole patch of grass) and dump it into my sink. Then I basically wash all soil out, leaving me with plants and roots (rhizomesin case of Phalaris). Now that all soil is gone its easy to see which rhizome is that of my selected phalaris and I will work it out of the root mess by just cutting pulling and so on. Once done this leaves me with a Phalaris rhizome, I will cut it into sections, trim the green parts, pot and water it. The pot is okay to be very shallow (see the nature of the Phalaris rhizome). Soon a patch of Phalaris will be formedby runners, so it will be basically one genetically identical plant that lends itself for further rhizome cultivation, to make more patches or plant into the garden. Also the same patch will of course be good for harvest and regular harvest will even make it produce more runners and spread in your tray.

Anything else you wonder about ? No access to wild Phalaris ?

Well, in looking over phalaris distribution maps, I found that phalaris should grow wild in my area. I just have some concerns with identification. Any extract from a non phalaris (or the wrong phalaris) species could leave me with some less-desirable alkaloids. My worst fear is an accidental gramine extraction. I'm in hardiness zone 5b/6a technically. Could grow indoor/outdoor plants.

Well... you will most probably pull some gramine when extracting from Phalaris, and gramine is hard to dissolve selectively.
Regarding misidentifications, I dont know of any species that is a lookalike to the desired plant, but a herbae books for your area should make IDs easier and reliable. Also I can only recommend to use the above technique to acquire different Phalaris subspecies, cultivate them, and extract them all using standartised tek. You will then have reproducable results. Of course testing your different products from different Phalaris should not first be conducted by administration, but by judging general appearances, especially color and crystal shape, melting point and solubility. You can also use advanced techniques on your product to verify and check the exact composition and maybe gramine content - chromatography ... (How do analytical methods work? (TLC, UV-Vis Spectrophotometry, GC-MS, LC-MS, etc) - Plant Analysis and Substance Testing - Welcome to the DMT-Nexus this thread sums it up ) I'm not a lot of help with that then ... or lets say I could tell you how to get your product pure with a column and also I could help you verify there only is that one product in later chromatography on a plate. But I'm not the person who can explain verify the found compound is what you want or tell you what other spots on your plate are.

In fact I am planning to do some more chromatography, especially I am interested in analysing the water someone bubbled spice through - to see how much there is about claims it would reduce your products "potency"
