Could a search algorithm be written to search out all swear words on the forum and replace those words with '*****'?
That would tidy up the whole forum in one swift mouse click. :)

Cyb i am not sure whether this would work too well. I did a few searches of various swear words and slang, and when i made a search of the word c*ck i got directed to a great deal of threads involving Graham Hancock. I think that if he was to visit the site and see that we had bleeped out half of his name it would be likely that he would take undue offence.

I'm not a programmer, nor do I know anything about algorithms, but I do know that for anyone who does know that stuff, finding c*ck and skipping Hancock is as simple as knowing where to use Asterix and parenthes. Shout out to members, ill bet someone here could do that pretty easily

I personally think that swear words should be seen in the context in wich they are being used.

A very good example of what i mean is the post of hug46 quoted here. Although he is not literally using the word "cock" here, replacing it with "c*ck", i think he could have done it without violating any rule, because the word is not being used in an offensive or inappropriate way.

Another example is quotating or paraphrasing. Paraphrasing is ofcourse a little more sensitive because you are not literally saying what some other person said or would have said, and sometimes it is also hard to make a very clear distinction between paraphrasing and strawmanning.

But i think that when you are paraphrasing a racist person for instance, you could sometimes use the n-word without being offensive, because it is a word that some racist people would actually use. So it could just be part of a realistic portrayal of a certain situation.

In such a case i personally think, paraphrasing is not the same as just dropping it yourself.

There isn't realy a great consensus on such issues. Some people find that tarantino movies are racist because his characters are using the n-word a lot, but other people, black people included, find that the context of these movies takes away the normally offensive nature of the words.

So as long as there is no worldwide consensus on these issues, wich is probably forever, i think we will just have to look at it case by case.

I am speaking for myself here btw. This is not an official DMT-nexus position on swear words.

For me it is WAY more simple: just don't use offensive words and don't substitute them with other words with the same meaning/attention and don't use other characters to fill in the blanks, we all know you still mean the same.

If you feel you have to swear then that means you should not be on this site at that moment, it's such a simple attitude to stick to it.

This is not about hiding offensive words, this is about not using them in the first place so can have a much better and actually constructive discussion.

Kind regards,

You've build this place trav, so when it's about anything concerning the DMT-nexus your word is the final word.

But i do think we should cut graham some slack when he finds out we decided to change his name to graham han-c-word.
