Help With Rue Extraction

Suppose, hypothetically, that SWIM were following the freebase extraction TEK for Rue:

but wasn't getting a precipitation in step 6. If SWIM had gone way overboard with vinegar, would this prevent a precipitation? If so would neutralizing the vinegar with a base (sodium carbonate, say) be the solution? Could adding more NaCl save the day?

Overdoing the acid would prevent a precipitate forming. You need to use more ammonia. Keep pouring until it starts turning bright yellow. I don't think you can over do it with the ammonia. I wouldn't use sodium carbonate, but then again I have never tried. What was posted as the tek works great.

You really don't need much, if any vinegar to begin with...so don't overdo it next time.

You shouldn't have any problems saving your extraction though, you just need to basify the juice further!

SWIM did a bit more reading and found this interesting note from Trout:

It turns out SWIM wasn't too far off after all, so will just wait a bit longer to see if the precipitate is just a bit delayed.

However, if recovery is necessary SWIM is thinking of going with sodium bicarbonate over ammonia. The respective byproducts of neutralization are sodium acetate and ammonium acetate, with the former seeming a bit more benign than the later. (However if someone knows that one of these salts is be soluble in salt walter, please let me know, so SWIM doesn't have to worry about an acetate precipitating out along with the harmine salts.)
