hexane or heptane?

Migrated topic.

Greetings one and all,

I am gearing up to do my first extraction and I'm wondering about n-hexane. I've been doing some reading and apparently the use of n-hexane is being phased out (in the world of pharmaceutical land), due to it's long term toxicity.. It is being replaced by n-heptane.

Does anyone here know about n-heptane or has anyone used it?

Any help much appreciated. I will be sure to post on my findings and let y'all know.

Thanks and love to all

Heptane (AKA n-heptane, the non-cyclo form of the 7C alkane) has been consistently used as a specific non-polar solvent by many people reporting in the Nexus. I don't have experience with it myself, but as far as I know it's a perfectly valid option.

I usually pull with naphtha, then re-x with heptane because it's a more selective solvent and gets less impurities in it. It would likely work just as well to pull with heptane, but it is a little more expensive so I try to use as little as possible. It has to be heated up pretty good also. Room temp heptane doesn't dissolve near the same amout of DMT as room temp naphtha.
