as title describes, im wondering how I can clean my Harmala alkaloids from my Harmala Red. Also, on a side note- is there any way to freebase Harmala Red so I can bioassay it & test its potency & ways to possibly convert it into an active substance by co-administration of another substance (or otherwise)?

How do I clean Harmala alkaloids from Harmala Red?

Well it is under my opinion that harmala red is likely oxidized harmala alkaloids(vaporized pure white harmalas turn to a red oil). When I had harmala red appear to me(syrian rue extraction after evaporating harmalas from acetone or methanol iirc) I performed a manske kept the alkaloids that precipitated and the water. I then basified the water to yeild a precipitate that was pink/red and floated. This I believe is harmala red if you're harmalas were already relatively clean before they turned red this is likely the case.
Your mileage may vary but I think it's worth a shot to recreate the experiment and clean up your harmalas.
There are ways to reduce this compound if this is indeed harmala oxides(which it might not be) to regular harmala's. One way is FeSO4 and ammonia I believe. Perhaps sodium dithionite, but it is on a heterocycle so I'm not sure.
If these are from syrian rue I would try a manske first then basify the water and see if any pink precipitate forms. I apologize to call them 'harmalas' rather then harmine/harmaline but I'm being lazy right now.

Yep they are from syrian rue. Thanks, I will give it a shot at some point this week. I wish I knew this before I threw out a large batch that turned red/oily on me, I suspect because of extended suspension in isopropyl alcohol...

Well we don't 'know' for sure yet. Some member's here have said there is no evidence to suggest that harmala alkaloids will oxidize by being evaporated from alcohol solutions. However in my experience it has, and it seems in your's as well. So give it a shot and please post back with results

Has anyone ever done experiments w/ bioassaying of harmala red in any quantity? Perhaps it is active but less so than harmaline/harmine. If not, would you agree that smoking would be a safe route to test that? Also, would this reaction make it so that harmala red is smokeable?
