How do you think SWIM's extraction went?

SWIM started off with 226 grams of MHRB powder (.5lbs of very fine powder), lye crystals, and 1L of VM&P naphtha.

Mixed 100 grams of lye with 1L water in a ~3L jar.
Stirred and waited for it to cool down a bit
Added the MHRB, stirred vigorously for it to settle and mix. Ended with a rather liquidy sludge.
Waited ~30 minutes.
Added 300ml of naphtha and mixed gently
Waited 30 minutes to separate, moved naphtha to tray
Added another 300ml of naphtha and mixed gently
Waited 30 minutes to separate, moved naphtha to tray
Added the final 400ml of naphtha, mixed
Waited 1 hour, moved naphtha to tray

Those were pretty much the proportions SWIM used. SWIM read a lot of different teks on extraction. Some said to wait over 3 hours to separate. Some said to stir naphtha for 30 minutes. Some say never to wait more than 20 minutes.

SWIM is still waiting for evaporation to finish. However SWIM is keeping the MHRB jar for later extraction since he is sure that he didn't even get 1/5th of it.

How do you think SWIM did? Any guesses on approximate yields? An suggestions for later extraction?

I think SWIY used waaaaaaaaaay too much naphtha... For this ammount, 100ml warm pulls are better... Also, just stiring/letting separate the pull once is not enough, so maybe your yield wont be so big.. Better to stir and let layers separate, then stir again and let separate again, do this many times for each pull, and only then separate. and make 5 pulls...

Lastly, instead of evaporating it all, when its nearly all evaporated (by your quantities, let each pull evap until maybe 10% is left), put in a sealable container and then into the freezer. It will yield you purer product.. The evaping will maybe yield you some more yellow oily stuff. If so, keep scrapping/rescrapping this oily/waxy stuff into the side of a dish several times over a couple of days and it should harden up. Then if you want to make it cleaner you can redissolve it in warm naphtha (like 30ml per 1g dmt) and stick in the freezer.

SWIM usually just shakes the shit out of the extraction container, and as soon as the layers separate completely, the solvent is ready to pull off. In the recent STB tek I posted, SWIM yields 17.1g of slightly yellow crystals from 2 lbs of MHRB. SWIM never mixes it multiple times, although he does place the container in a heat bath to facilitate quicker separation and to slightly warm the naphtha to extract more DMT, than with a cooler solvent.

SWIM has a hard time understanding how to "let it separate". When SWIM mixed the naphtha in, it was pretty much separated already as soon as he put the jar right side up, and was 95% separated when he waited 30 minutes. 17.1g yeilds seem to be rather a lot from 2 lbs. If the DMT content of rootbark is roughly 0.5% then out of 2lbs you should be able to get no more than 5grams. Far off from 17.

SWIM checked the evap today. The liquid is yellow but was clear yesterday. Not much seems to have evaporated, so SWIM will relocate the solution to a much wider tray.

Swim will start using 150ml of naptha, shake and let settle a couple of times and then evap that. Will report back with yeilds once evaporated and cleaned.

yes it starts to separate very quickly when one stops mixing. But dont shake, it will very possibly create emulsions. Stir, in round motions, fast and strong.

as I said, I would recommend sticking in the freezer after evaping to 10%, but if you want to evaporate its also ok, though it might yield a yellower/oily product instead of possibly white crystals.

btw, general consensus here seems to be that mimosa has definitely more than 0,5% dmt if one makes it right.. people have been reporting more like 1%, and depending on technique even up to 2% or so

2% is amazing. Swim will go for that. =D

SWIM will clean crystals after he has extracted most of them. So SWIM is not very concerned with the quality of the crystals he gets, as long as there are many.

Not much is evaping at the moment, and SWIM does not understand why. Its sitting in a rather large tray now, and SWIM does not see any crystals what so ever forming. Naphtha should evaporate quickly, while this is evaporating slower than water.

if your naphtha is heavy, and has mixed aromatic hydrocarbons (like xylene and so on), then it will evap very slowly (and it could also pull some jungle spice which will make your product more red/orange and oily, instead of crystally white). In any case, crystals should only form in the end when there is practically no naphtha left


as for the 2%, dont expect that in your first extraction, think more about 0.5% now, max 1%, and with time, experience, technique and good mimosa, you can maybe at some point get 2% :)

Thanks for all the help endless! One last question.

How long can SWIM let the lye water/MHRB mix sit in the jar without destroying the DMT? SWIM says he probably cant get any naphtha until tomorrow, will prolonged exposure to acidic water destroy the DMT molecule?

Also, can SWIM keep extracting and extracting from this jug for weeks until the desired amount of DMT is extracted. Its not going anywhere right?

you can leave it there for long time, dont worry... a few days would be no problem, and I would suspect that even months would be no problem but no need to leave for so long hehe. the only possible problem is if your jar is not strong enough, the lye might start weakening the glass/eating up plastic... but still this shouldnt happen in a day or two with glass or hdpe plastic..

and btw, lye + water isnt acidic, its the inverse, its basic :)
