How does one identify Primary Cultivar (PC) variations?

Hi all,

I'm curious how to identify PC pedros. Sorry if this has been discussed before, I couldn't find anything after a few searches.

There's this wonderful page by Keeper Trout called "panchanoi or pachanot". It seems the differences are difficult to tell.

Is there a general rule of thumb when shopping for live pedros? Or are the hairs on the flowers/fruits the only sure way to tell?

highly unlikely to purchase flowering trichs typically.

I recognize the pc because it was the first plant i started with- propogated it gave it away learned to extract from it and stared at it for a few years before i got any good genes.

my best advice is to not buy them- but to trade them with fellow growers with similar goals.

personally i just stick to achuma (its simpler that way) but the best way to know you aren't getting a PC would be to
A. buy a named clone (like juul's giant or something)
B. get it from a trustworthy entheogenic vendor (you can find one in the supplier section, as it is a live botanical)

from what i understand nearly all (if not all) the ones commonly sold in places like home depot or whatever are PC.
though from a greenhouse, you might be able to find some active ones.
i highly recommend adding a penis plant to your shopping list as well (both for novelty and potency - plus if it has multiple pups at once, it grows really fast)

I have heard the surest way to tell is that the areoles will be smooth, lined up with the skin of the rib. Also, above each areole there will be a distinct v-shaped or flat line. It can be seen on the pachinot's on occasion, but it is very distinct on the real non-PC ones. The last thing is that the areoles are generally much smaller on the real ones.

It seems to me that when you see the real ones, you just kind of know. Before I knew there was a difference, I had bought some cacti in bulk. I made a resin like I had done a few times before, but got my socks blown off. The trip was a good 3 times stronger at least than any pedro trip I had done before. Now, my goal is to take the remaining 2 real pachanois, and graft their pups on to some of my pachinots! Luckily, of the 2 good ones I didn't consume, they rooted and started 3 pups last summer. I can't wait for summer again!

Its intye way the central spine points. In the pc variety it mostly 90 percent of the time point upward. Were on non pc true pachanoi the central spine 90 percent of the time, it will point downwards.

Its easy to spot the PC (or perhaps just similar weak plants) when they flower. Not so easy when they aren't.
pachanoi has entirely dark brown to black hairs on the scales of the flower and on the fruit. As mentioned above its also a lot smoother in profile -- at least typically.
pachanot has mostly white to grey with light to medium brown.

Its less important in many regards to know whether something is or isn't a given clone than to know if it is worth investing the space and time growing it. If lacking an analytical lab or the ability to perform quantitative isolations, human bioassay is the easiest way to gauge potency.
If it turns out to be a weak plant think about giving it away and replacing it with something more potent. Your grandmother or a neighbor would probably love growing it. There are plenty of potent offerings out there so a person could potentially a really beautiful and varied garden that was entirely a good potency. Which seems better than hearing the question that I always used to be asked "Why do you only grow one cactus?"

Yeah, if any of my pedros turn out to be PC, I'll probably graft on to them. I have seeds of known non-PC trichs.
