How does your cactus garden grow? (Cactus pic thread)

Migrated topic.
Woohoo! Looks like she chose the Strawberry Moon to bloom her flower. Will take some pix and post later. She is a real beauty. Glad I was around to finally capture the moment. ;-)

Never tried to store the pollen or save the seeds. Might have to do that in the future.
Can't wait to see the results - and maybe an attempt at describing the scent too? 🤩

Was fully open when the moon rose over the mountains around 9:30PM on June 21 night of Strawberry Moon. The moon was amazing last night, red at first, then bright and yellow white. The flower was very fragrant and sweet smelling, almost like a Plumeria or Gardenia, but with a hint of citrus almost sweet lemon like in the background. Very unique. I would def buy an essential oil that smelled like this.

Thank you very much for sharing! I'd highly recommend setting up a time-lapse camera for soon-to-pop cactus buds, the results can be quite stunning.

Transform, that is a great idea about a time-lapse camera for next cacti blooms. So happy I was around for this event, was not sure me and the Torch were going to sync up or not on our schedules. I guess I can cross witnessing a Peruvian Torch bloom off my bucket list. ;-)

It's a special event, indeed - especially with these gigantic blooms. It was one of the highlights of the year for me last year when my own trichs bloomed for the first time. I really hope you're able to pollinate yours, but I have no idea if it'll be self-fertile. Mine, alas, were not.

I'm feeling a bit nervous about whether I'll manage to be here for my selenicereus blooms, although the buds are swelling up nicely now and we're in for a hot spell, so... It's a question of whether this will make up for the cold spell we had at the beginning of this month. I can tolerate up to three weeks of leeway compared to last year 👀

Edit: here's a time-lapse video of the trich blooms from last year

Oh that's fantastic! I love how two blooms open at the same time. Thanks for the video share. Now you have me pumped up to do a time lapse next bloom they throw off, maybe from multiple cameras. Thanks.

Looks like another cactus is pushing out a bloom. I'm going to predict that the full moon two moon cycles from now is when it will bloom. Let's see if I'm right. ;-)

My peyote garden taken in June. Garden is going on nine years. Started all from seed on the right two pots. The left middle pot specimens were grafted from large cluster from the left bottom. Started with one 2" T5 in my closet then upgraded to a chilled led last year. My garden took an interesting turn last year once I went full strength with the led light that started to preen the less vigorous ones and allow for the more vigorous ones to take off. I've since stopped grafting and am making way for deeper pots like the one on the left for the rest to give them the deep root space that gets them bigger faster. The fat left specimen is going to need to be repoted shortly for more room to stretch. It's sink or swim in there. I feel sad for the fallen but am excited for the big ones to make their way.

Kobranek have you ever spliced your yotes onto any faster growing cactus? There are some interesting reports from members here who have done that and increased their yote growth time significantly. Just curious if you had considered this or not.

Yeah I was grafting at first onto Perioskopsis but haven't anymore since I am starting to run into space issues, especially once I repot them into deeper pots. They are not as hardy when rooting them from grafting. I think because I was grafting the slower and smaller ones once it was time to root them they struggled. If they're already going to be weaker they're going to eventually show it once it's time to root. Not only that the fluorescent lights help them to root which I stopped doing and instead just stuck them straight in the leds at full power. I am currently propagating my San Pedro garden and plan to start grafting onto San Pedro once I get a good stock going.

COOL! There seem to be a lot of inexpensive full spectrum LED light options available in a variety of formats and plug options. These seem to work better for cactus and plants (indoors) than fluorescent or incandescent lights. Have seem some amazing yote on SP grafts. Good luck.

Here is another P. Torch throwing off a bloom. Looking a lot older than the one next to it.

Has this popped yet? We all love a nice trich flower pic!

Meanwhile, lophs be sproutin' merrily here. A bit of urine seems to have coaxed them out of their crusting issue, so I'm taking a guess they wanted more phosphate. They also like generous watering from time to time during hot spells (y)

The cut one went onto a PC pach grafting stock, I'll try to include something for comparison of scale:

As we can see, the grafted part has grown something like twice as fast in terms of volume at the very least.

My first ever loph-to-pach graft has been rather satisfactory. I'm now very glad to have a good supply of PC pach for grafting stock, but may have to hold off until later next spring (northern Europe). Perhaps I should explore better lighting options, but my LED floodlights were really cheap…
