How important is airtight packaging in the freezer ?

Hey guys, SWIM is doing a STB extraction at the moment (noman's tek).
He wanted to know how important it is to have airtight packing ?
He uses a baking dish with a corresponding lid. Has he to seal up the baking dish ?
