thinking about getting the following supplies: buchner funnel vaccuum filtration system w/ hand pump filter papers seperatory funnel cost doesnt matter so much, am just asking you guys how much easier, quicker and "fun" it will make the process in your opinions thanks

Doing an organic and aqueous phase separation is so much harder when you are not using a seperatory funnel. It allows you to get every bit of that particular phase your trying to get which equals greater yields. Filter papers are easier to use along with the vacuum filtration. The filter papers are really nice at catching solid products as well as quick filtration through a hand pump or automated vacuum compared to reallying on coffee filters and gravity. (coffee filters are huge, product tends to be spred out a lot more on them, and if scrapped you'll probably start to rip the coffee filter) Over all using lab equipment not only allows you to obtain greater yields, it also allows you to move more quickly.

yeah i'd love to get a 2000ml sep funnel at some point. but where to buy one? found plenty of places online, but wouldn't want to arouse any unwanted interest (if what swim was doing were illegal). anyone know of any good places? i'm based in uk.

I have been collecting lab ware for years now, it becomes addictive but by far the most useful piece of equipment (glassware) I use is my 2L sep funnel, my 500ml hardly gets used any more. Vacuum filtration is great however if it is just for removing unwanted solids I would suggest getting a buchner funnel that can take the 100mm + papers. I have a small 70mm one and it cloggs up too quickly. You also want a minimum 500ml vacuum flask but a 1L would be better.
