Migrated topic.

SWIM is interested in Soxhlet extractors, and could even seem himself getting one someday, but is worried that it might draw unwanted attention from the authorities even though he would not be using it for anything immoral or unethical. He is particularly worried because his profession requires periodic background checks by "high level" law enforcement agencies (i.e. FBI, DEA, homeland security - you get the idea).

Does anyone know of a way this kind of thing could be acquired without leaving any traces? Or if not, any legitimate reasons for possessing such a thing?

homeopathic remedies, aromatherapy, holistic medicine, etc.

small businesses are sympathetic to hobbyists. it's not too difficult to purchase one from a small company without
arousing suspicion from the gestapo. It's the larger businesses which scratch backs with other corporate conglomerates and gov't agencies. Avoid such companies as S*gma-Aldr#ch, they like to tattle and won't sell to residences.

I have heard these putative uses for Soxhlets and sep funnels before but do not see how you could actually use them for any of these applications. What holistic remedies could you make with a Soxhlet?

My favorite explanation for sep funnels so far is making biodiesel :)

You want the soxhlet to make tinctures. Make super concentrated solutions of plant extracts. You know, valeriana, chamomile, echinacea, ginger, etc. You'll find many herbalists making their tinctures and quite a few of them use the soxhlet for the extra efficiency (cost-, time- and material- wise)

You also want a soxhlet for making dyestuffs from natural products (which you'll use for dyeing fabric)

You want the soxhlet to make yourself the strongest possible coffee. Because that's the only way you enjoy it.

Basically you want the soxhlet for anything that can be extracted from some material, usually plant. You run the soxhlet on raw tobacco leaves or chrysanthemum flowers because you want to make concentrated insecticides for your infested plants.

And so many more uses!

I know a guy who uses a Soxhlet for extracting red peppers for use in making hot sauce he sales to the public.

There are so many legitimate uses for one. I think the most common is to use a Soxhlet for making very potent herbal tinctures.
