Huge strange crystal.....

Hello there,

I checking around for a while on this site but never had posted something so here my first post.
SWIM try to make some good dmt and now something very strange was happaning
A while ago SWIM putted extract fluid in in my closet for like 1.5 a 2 months and now SWIM have a very huge chrystal that weighs 56.9gr..... :shock:
SWIM don;t know wtf it is it smells like dmt it melts between SWIMS fingers but this is crazy SWIM don't believe it's pure dmt because SWIM only used 1.5kilo hostillis.
Does someone know what this could be?
It looks yellow in the picture because of the light but it is pure clear....
I hope someone can give an explanation.

First i used NaOH and then mixed it up with petroleum ether.
I don't know exactly if i used other chemicals for this one but i think it's only this two...

Looks like somekind of polyethylene , I use to sand floors and we'd find similar chunks like that in old solvent buckets we'd forgotten about , same colour and all !!

If it is dmt it'd have to be worth a fortune to a crystal collector or just a rich psycho-naught !!

I would guess at it being some sort of soap bar formed out of the sludge and lye and dmt but thats a wild stabb in the dark. can we get a close up shot , preferrably shining light through from the other side so we can illuminate the layers.

It's beautiful, but that is just a gooey resin of some kind.

Labs have measured DMT content in bark and it's in the single-digit % range. There's no way that your crystal is DMT. If there's any DMT in it, it's only tiny, near-invisible specks.


You have two choices:

A) Keep it as a souvenir. If you can afford to lose that DMT, it makes for a good story. "That beautiful crystal there contains some DMT from a failed extraction."

B) Dissolve that thing completely in Heptane or Naphtha and do a massive sodium carbonate wash and then do a freeze precipitation. But there's a big risk that whatever that crystal is made out of will also be soluble in your Heptane/Naphtha, so it might be impossible to separate it away. Seems you've used a bad solvent from the beginning and it might be impossible to salvage this one...

Yeah SWIM thinks he keeps it for what it is.
It´s not the only strange crystal btw hhere another one.

Well this whole thing was strange because SWIM had some kind of jungle spice in his naphtha.
It was very potent stuff and tripped very well on it but it was very strange all this stuff.
I quess it was a some old bark or something next time SWIM order from another store.

All of your photos are absolutely beautiful. If this was me, I'd be so happy to keep those crystals as souvenirs. They're gorgeous.

My guess is that your petroleum ether contained additional oils/additives of some type, which is what dried and glued itself together into a crystal after the clean part of the solvent had evaporated away. Next time, make sure you're using clean glassware for the mixing (preferably with polypropylene caps, to resist chemicals). And be sure to use Heptane or Naphtha. You should be able to find one or the other in a paint store, as a paint/oil removal solvent.

The differences are: Heptane is much more efficient at holding DMT, so you need less solvent. It is more expensive, it evaps 4x faster than Naphtha, and it's more common in Europe. But the evaporation rate of Heptane is so slow that you definitely won't feel any time pressure, so don't let its evap rate influence your choice. Naphtha on the other hand is cheaper but less efficient, and is the type that's more common in the U.S. Both of them are classified as "chemically pure" solvents.

Just go into a paint store and say you need chemically pure gasoline for removing oil spills in your garage. When they hand you a bottle, look at the front of the label and the back ingredients and look for the words "Heptane" or "Naphtha" somewhere. If it's completely pure, you're good to go. Otherwise just say something like "This doesn't look right. I've read that it's best to use completely pure Heptane so that it evaporates rapidly and without leaving any residue in my garage." And if they can't find any pure Heptane/Naphtha in their inventory, say you're going to have to go home and research whether their own type is okay. Then just write down its product name and let us know and we'll be able to check the spec sheets online and figure out if it's good enough to use.

If you want extra safety, the best thing you can do is to go online and look up *pure* heptane/naphtha brands in your own country and then try to find retailers of those brands. That way you know exactly what bottle to look for, and can ask for *that* exact bottle, without it being suspicious whatsoever. Just say "Hi! I'd like a bottle of Momma's Delicious Heptane, please!" - and you're done.

Why did you leave this in your closet for over a month? Was it evaporating during this time too?

What method did you use to extract, you said just ether and sodium hydroxide?

If you keep this as a souvenir and get caught you will be charged with the entire weight of your gumball as dmt I believe.


Do something smart about it.

Naah they are not very strict in this country with personal use and they won't check that i think.
I have no idea wtf it was but i think alot of sodium lye stuff.

It is very likely not a NaOH (lye) crystal, considering that NaOH is very hygroscopic.

NaOH crystals, or pellets or powder left open to the air will absorb humidity from the air and melt. Then the wet NaOH will start reacting with CO2 in the air, forming Na2CO3 and H2O. When nearly all NaOH has reacted, the remaining Na2CO3 solution may begin to lose water by evaporation, until crystals of Na2CO3 * 10 H2O form - the decahydrate of washing soda. Small amounts of trapped NaOH may raise the pH of the redissolved crystals over that of pure Na2CO3.

In the Netherlands, personal use and possesion (in personal use amounts) of DMT, although illegal, is generally not a cause for serious proceedings by legal authorities, other than the illegal substances being impounded and perhaps a modest fine being given in return. Sometimes at festivals, police sets up a "processing line" of sorts and possession might additionally cause a criminal record. There is some controversy over this practice.

Neither will it create "DMT lab" headlines, as currently that space in the media is already fully occupied by the many XTC and speed labs being busted along with on average many kilos of respective contraband.
