/ignore in chat

Migrated topic.

Could we please have a /ignore option to cause whomever we /ignore to not see our posts and for us to not see theirs in the chat?

I would like to use this when people go on and on about CT. Rather than trying to convince them to stop I would just like to ignore them so I can enjoy a pleasant chat.

"Fun & Off Topic" doesn't seem to have much action. Why not, a "Welcome Area" chat and make "Hyperspace Tavern" for promoted members only.

This would conform to the preexisting structure of the forum and the new guys seem to be the ones causing trouble.

The reason this has yet to be implemented is because the chat room is an excellent resource for new members.
A lot of the times we get members who come into the chat and who do not even know about the welcome area, and we get to inform them about it 😉

We really do not have a problem with new members. Today there was an instance with an old member. Like I said, if someone steps out of line, you simply call them out. Try not to fuel the fire and a moderator will take care of it.

This has worked for the past 2 years and I see it continuing to do so just fine.

Makes sense.

I suppose I don't see the need to change anything. Like you said, it's a good resource and mods are usually around. Other than that, I'm learning to just ignore the misbehavior - it's just the nature of the Internet.

I just try to stay away from chat now other than the odd time. Problem solved :)

Seriousily, I understand. Alot of stupid people seem to frequent that chat randomly..or used to anyway. I have not much interest in the chat at all these days so I dont know how bad it is. I definatily dont moderate in there at all anymore. I go in there briefly and infrequently and thats it. I would just ignore trolls, they get bored and go away...

Or you can save a copy of the chat in question and PM it to one of the mods so that we can deal with the member in whatever way is necessary.

I'm with House on this one. I think the implementation of any type of ignore feature would destroy a lot of what I love about this community. Trolls and people full of hate will quickly grow tired of the Nexus if they can't reap bountiful harvests of hateful replies.

I wasn't in the chat today, as I was dancing with Lucy, Dimitri, my pitbull, and my closest childhood friend around a fire under the stars... buy my opinion remains the same.

luv you guys, peace and happy journeys :)

+1.

This thread was a proposal to add a small feature to the chat, and I gave ONE example of why it would be useful. It would also be useful for ignoring the occasional troll. Please keep discussion of whether or not you want CT on the nexus to the threads devoted to it. I would like the /ignore idea to be considered separate from the ct issue, please.

I still think the /ignore command is a bad idea. I still hold firm to my suggestion for a /warn command so people will know if they don't change the subject/attitude they will be removed from chat.

I've been in chat rooms where they had an ignore command and it completely kills the whole vibe of chat.

I for one would probably not come back to chat if I got /ignored. It's rude, disrespectful and against the whole vibe of the Nexus.

I think we can keep the chat as it is, withou the ignore function. This for reasons already stated in this thread.

What I can do however is make all senior members a chat mod, that way the chances of a mod being available is higher.

Kind regards,

Since /ignore is off the table but the problems do continue in a way that makes me wonder about disturbing trends I would like to put something else up for consideration.

I like the senior promotion idea but those are mostly men. Unlike the past, there are now a number of regular female participants in chat, at least one of which has stated she feels afraid to speak. :( :x Maybe for different reasons than I suspect, I don't know. Nonetheless, I would really like to see a woman who is an active and regular participant in chat be considered for promotion to chat mod.

I know that I am not on any potential list for this. Ms. Manic Minxx is not present enough, neither is Aegle. Enoon is pursuing other things, including mainly Spanish presence in chat. Thus I would like to immediately suggest Sally and/or elru for consideration.

Thanks so much. :D

Edit: Hmm... my inital post may have sounded a bit harsh... Long story short, I left chat permanently because, for all the good that was happening, there was some rudeness. Had there been an ignore function, I would have stayed. Separate tabs did not fix the problem, they created more windows where rude people spilled rude bile all over other conversations.

From a practical standpoint, too, too many simultaneous conversations in a crowded room can make participation difficult.

In the end, the style of communication I prefer just probably isn't synchronous with why chatrooms exist, so people who feel the same way might feel better if they just stuck to the forums.

The help-on-demand aspect of chat, though, is INVALUABLE. The most important service, possibly, offered by the Nexus.

I'm not gonna harp on specifics, but some folks here know exactly what I'm talking about. ms._manic_minxx, interesting post. Sorry to read this is why we see you about 10 mins. every 6 months in there.

If need be, I'm happy to begin a new thread on this topic. Until instructed to do so or until this thread is locked I'm gonna keep pushing my last agenda item and bump this thread to the top - things have changed A LOT in chat in the past couple of years. Including the regular presence of a number of females. Sorry if you don't like to see it but it is a bald fact. Almost all the power at Nexus is concentrated in the hands of males. Majority group members sometimes don't see things that minority group members perceive.

What do the words moderate, moderation and moderator mean? I believe one or more regular female chat mods could help to enhance these definitions as they are applied in chat.

I would like to very, very strongly advocate for a regular female chat moderator and nominate Sally and/or elru for immediate consideration.

Thanks again. :D
