I'm back! my shroom tek

Migrated topic.

Rising Star
please correct me in any way shape or form, i basically have been reading several sites so i am going to jot down what i am about to do, i have copied all my ideas and i will list sources :) dreamoar042 and oly thank you for your help in chat!

first thing i am going to do is liquid culture? why you ask well, dreamoar042 said it will inoculate faster since it has already colonized and he said my syringes will go farther. which i cant complain. thank you again :D

# Light malt extract (or extra light. The lighter the better, because it will make it easier to observe growth in the jar.)
# Dextrose (glucose)

this is what im not to sure on! ok im thinking 1 tablespoon dextrose and 1 tablespoon light malt extract per 500ml (2 cup) water.

hot or warm water before adding sugars to allow for quicker dissolving. place a marble in the jar for agitation. Wrap top with aluminum foil and place jar in pressure cooker and slowly bring it up to 15 psi. for 15-20 min.

place lid on rubber side down, with lid and have an inoculation and extraction hole. inoculate the jar 1 cc per 2 cups of liquid culture.... yumm!
Once inoculated stick in a DARK place with a temp of 82-86F.Signs of growth after one week max, and fully done at week 3 max. Some see growth in under a day and fully done in 3. Once growth has slowed down (done), either use immediately or store in a fridge.

NEXT!!!! how exciting ^^ now that, that is down its time to knock up my patty cakes!

Reynolds-brand oven bags small is 10" by 16", rated to hold 4 pounds weight and oven-safe at up to 400° F.
They make dandy 'jars' for PF-style substrate in bulk amounts. Just mix up enough rice/verm. for X # of jars, (see note at bottom for a few ideas on this part) spoon into the bag, tie the bag closed, bake at 250° F for 45 min. Allow to cool in the oven until safe to touch. Stick the now cooled oven bag inside another, larger bag, ziplock and let cool to room temp. When cool, one can inject liquid culture right through the plastic (seal hole with tape). Once white growth becomes visible in a few days, speed up colonization by shaking the bag, and mixing the patches into uncolonized areas.

* Double bag the substrate - i.e. fill a regular size oven bag with the substrate, seal that by twisting and the tie included in the box (heat-resistant, non-metallic for microwave fans), then place that inside yet another, larger oven bag and seal it likewise.
* Squeeze most of the air out of the inner bag so steam has room to expand and leave some air in the outer large bag, so as the inner bag cools, any air sucked in is also sterile.
* Once "baked" for 45 minutes, pop the entire thing in yet a larger third ziplock storage bag, the kind that can handle hot foods. Then into the fridge to cool.
* Use an electric mixer on low to mix up: 3 cups Vermiculite, 1 1/2 cups brown rice flour, 1 1/2 cups water,in a large bowl per bag!
* When filling the oven bags, fold back the rim several inches, so no foodstuff gets on the bag near the neck/seal.
* When inoculating, don't let the needle touch the substrate, just raise the plastic above the 'cake' an inch or so & squirt spores everywhere, about 3 cc will do plenty.
* After inoculation, throw several into a black plastic trash-bag 75-85 degrees F for several weeks keep out the light & help prevent contams.

ok so i have made my liquid culture and now i have my patty cakes done ready for fruiting, mwhahahahah!

since it will have been like a month that has past im going to start steps one and two over again so that when my fruits have been harvest the next batch will be ready by then:idea:

im getting a cake dish, or foil what ever is laying around and i will cut the cake out of the zip lock Reynolds and have the cake lay naked with the frosting shinning! 90-95 humidity; 75-80 degrees F; is a good range for fruiting. i will put them in my fruiting chamber! :p ( http://www.caligrowkits.com/product2.php ) get my perlite nice and damp and not soupy. and i will set the timer for the grow light on a 12/12.

pick and dry... that cant be too hard. the hardest part is choosing which 81 strains of Cubensis i wont to grow, i believe house said penis envy.... any feed back would be great thanks a million!

500ml of liquid culture should last a long time, unless you are doing huge grows.
I have no experience with bags, I've always used jars so I can't help you with that.

As for liquid culture, you want to make sure absolutely no air from the outside gets in. I put the lids on during the pressure cooking step, just not sealed tight. When the jars cool off there is an under-pressure created in the jars which most of the times closes them by itself, but I went and turned the lids anyway to check if they were closed. Each lid has two injection ports, either made of silicon or rubber ones that you can buy. to equilibrate the pressure you can use an air port made out of a syringe (sterile) with pressure cooked / sterilized polyfill that has been drenched in IPA or something sanitizing. If you skip this step the lower pressure in the jar will suck out your spore syringe.

Liquid culture is clear. If it ever turns foggy / opaque toss it. you have bacterial infection. If you need to toss it, pressure cook it first. You don't want these bacteria getting anywhere on you... mold supposedly also looks different from mycelial growth so check some photos online about this.

For fruiting, if you have the cakes lying open you might want higher humidity (95+), but you might have to adjust it midway - you can tell by the look of the shrooms - if they are really fuzzy at the base your humidity is maybe a bit too high... I think the shape changes too, but I'd have to look it up in the book.

As for drying, for me a fan and some grills worked very well. After they were as dry as they would get I put them in a big tub with dessicant in it to get them cracker dry. worked like a charm.

As for strains... I've only grown Thais but I really liked them. I started Ecuadorians and as far as the mycelial part goes they were just as easy as the Thais; unfortuantely I never got around to fruiting them. So as for difficulty I think there's not much difference in cubes. As for effects, Thais are nice, Columbians are really nice, and I hear ecuadorians are also great. PE I've never tried. Mexicans are decent but I prefer columbians.

thank you for your reply enoon.... OK, so i over shot the liquid substrate, ill do half of what i was thinking 1 cup then. maybe 2 jars one for later use or if i fumble one up.

"Each lid has two injection ports, either made of silicon or rubber ones that you can buy."

ok i am a little lost on this part ^^, could you give me a hyperlink to look at of the silicon or rubber? or are you just talking about the rubber ring along the out side?

i was thinking hey ill make my substrate, then i will put the lid on, with 2 holes then put tin foil over that then screw on the lid let it pressure cook, remove the jars and see if it is clear, if it is clear then inoculate it. after removing the tinfoil. and place tape on the holes and let it do its thing.

i should use 3cc on the substrate to inoculate it, but after it is done, do i use it like a spore syringe? suck up 2cc and baste my cakes 1 cc on each side?

if i am far off just let me know and ill get to doing more research, but thank you, cause i am having a hard time finding straight answers out there.

drill a hole in the lid and place loctite on the hole let it sit for a day or two... i can stand the pressure cooker. thank you benzyme, for the information
