Is steel wool/brillo safe to inhale?

Some person said otherwise:

no no no. First of all, I see plastic, a BIG NO. Second of all, steel wool? Another BIG NO. You have no idea what deadly toxins you're inhaling when you use that thing, Good grief, smoking's bad enough for you as it is, you don't want those terrible extra toxins going into your lungs to make it worse.

Whenever I'm going to use any kind of a screen material, I flame the hell out of it first. The problem with steel wool is that when you do this, it crumbles into a powder very easily, and it's probably not good to inhale that powder. I'm not sure about brillo, as I've never used it, but all the crack heads seem to like it.
