Salutations,
The idea of "medicating" through the lungs ain't exactly new and asthma certainly is one good hint from which to start investigating, for example:
Actually we can easily imagine "hot boxing" performed by aboriginals in a hut, using little more than just hot rocks. But if it's got to be a patented "medical" product then this might be the 1st successful inhaler:
Then here's some more detail about that invention's time-frame:
Yet it was the Mudge Inhaler which became popular, documented in 'A radical and expeditious cure for a recent catarrhous cough', John Mudge, 1778.
And this may explain why it remained a reference for 160+ years:
Some additional description can be found here:
So it seems the mix of humidity and fresh air has been around for quite a long while. Which is no wonder to me who noticed the "PinHole" à la VapMan and self-moisturization in VaporGenie's pipe a dozen years ago, e.g. when i explored ways to combine those two time-tested features...

In retroscpective...
160 years with the Mudge Inhaler ain't bad, the VaporGenie practically takes us back to Y2K while the VapMan survived the vape wave and is now being updated with an audible clicker:
No doubt the new VapMan works with cannabis, not to mention it's apparently retaining basic functionality if powered by the manufacturer's "Station", so i guess those who can appreciate proven concepts in an updated format will feel urged to watch the videos too - though one may need to inhale in a moist environment to obtain humidification, like after having a hot shower... In any case ain't this paving the way to more creative experiment(s) for posterity?!
Good day, have fun!!

How inhalers have evolved, one breath at a time
« According to an article published in the Journal of Aerosol Medicine and Pulmonary Drug Delivery, people have inhaled substances to treat asthma symptoms for at least 3500 years... »

N.B.: « Philip Stern, claims to have been the first to invent such a device 10 years earlier in 1768. »

« ...became popular for the treatment of any illness that caused a cough. »
« Holes were drilled into the top of the hollow handle, mixing fresh air with the steam. »
« Humidification remains a part of the today's respiratory therapies... »
