Science paper Interesting paper on Harmala

Disclaimer: This is not a post on its psychedlic effects I'm afraid. But worth a read.

I've always found harmala to be interesting in terms of research papers and evidence of its (potential effects and) effects on the human body. I.e It's ability to disrupt hsv division, its anabolic osteoblasts ability, tendon and ligament healing, neuroprtective properties and anti tumour properties just to name a few. I’ve heard in the past that tribes of the Amazon thought caapi as the primary spiritual healer and gateway of the ayahusca brew. And I can see why. Yet this study I find very fascinating. Especially with the poor lifestyles a lot of us lead and the effects that diabetes leads to down the track. Anyway anyone that understands the basic of this disease and how it affects beta cells in the pancreas will like the promise it shows in this paper.

Long story short it showed potential of 300% increase in beta cells with harmine alone and 700% when combined with drugs like ozempic and effects lasted months after initial dose. In vivo*

Very nice find and solid paper.

Just a pointer that the "in vivo" they are talking about are human pancreatic cells (from a donor, not a cell line) that are xenografted into mice model strains that are euglycemic or diabetic. It's a long way into "in vivo" compared to cell line models but still far from the target species Homo sapiens. Not dissing it, just setting a clear limit to high expectations.

I am curious on who or why someone would go for harmine for this or why someone would test it for dyrk1a inhibitor? What was the drive or discovery that got it to this point? Tried to go for it but the thread is longer than I expected and it will take some follow back in papers to figure it out. There are even analogues being made in this Paper.

Sounds like harmala might become an adjuvant...
