Ok, so I think I'm ready for my first attempt to extract some spice

However I have some questions before gathering my supplies.

1. After washing my filtered spice with ammonia I just wait untill it's dried?

2. In Dutch TEKS 'Terpentine' is used as solvent, this doesn't only contain Nafta but also;
benzene(less then 0,1%), xylene (aprox. 1%) and 1,2,4-Trimethyl benzene( 4%).
Can I use this without any health hazards?

3. Where do I mix my lye with bark and solvents? In other words, what is a save place in house to use these chemicals? Should I use something to cover my working area?

4. And the last famous can I use glass with lye? I tried to find this but couldn't find a conclusive answer (maybe beacuase I'm Dutch )

1) If they're seperated (filtered), what else can ya do
2) Only thing I've never heard of is 1,2,4-Trimethyl benzene but, the others should be safe...
Evaporate 100-200ml on glass and see if it leaves any residue.
3) Outside is best if you have the privacy. By a window with a fan if possible. If neither, do it quickly in a well ventilated area
and try not to breath any air from directly above the containers.
4) Yes you can use glass. No, it's not 100% safe. I've seen glass crack before.

Guessing from your post ... :
If you can't find any safe plastic for your soup & solvents then I'd suggest mixing the lye/water/mimosa in a gallon jug (really, any plastic jug)
until it's thoroughly mixed & then SAFELY and SLOWLY transfer that soup to the glass container that is safe to put your solvents in.

It sounds like you ought to be doing more reading.

I would not use the ammonia wash. A good extraction should not require it. If you need to clean it, re-crystalize or use a Sodium Carbonate wash.

Whichever solvent you use, evaporate some first to see if there are any trace residuals.

For the love of Jebus, please buy goggles and gloves. You can use glass for NaOH, you won't be working with it for that long. A stainless steel pot is good for cooking, and milk jugs are good for storing, pulling. The kitchen, cellar, bathroom is good.

When you say 'what is a safe place' - is this your own house? Do you have anyone else in the house or kids? DO NOT leave anything around that could possibly harm someone else, NOT MATTER HOW IMPOSSIBLE YOU THINK THE SITUATION COULD BE!

Be careful of spills and pets too.

If you work responsibly and cleanly, you should not have to cover anything. If you are asking these questions then you possibly have doubts.

Keep vinegar handy to neutralize and Lye spills.

1. I can't answer, never had any need for ammonia wash, I just re-crystalize until it reaches the desired level of purity, personally I've never had any need for washing and early on heard enough about possible yield loss that I've never experimented with it

2. I have no clue, evap to check for contams

3. I have done my extractions in kitchens always (3 different ones to be precise). A covered area is not necessary, but i like to work in/around/over the sink so that i have immediate access to water and a drain if something should break/spill.

4. Yes, you can use glass, preferably thick glass. Lye can/will etch glass, but this will only matter over a relatively long period of time and depends on how thick your glass is and how frequently its exposed to lye (i.e. how many extractions you use it for). Obviously, thicker glass lasts longer against this, but I still have the glass wine jug from my earlier extractions and its holding up fine as far as i can tell.

I think ghostman was just saying you don't sound like you know what's up and should generally read more stuff (im not tryin to put words in his mouth, just sayin), personally i'd say, if you feel you're ready/have done adequate research go ahead, however, if you have any doubts, just keep reading stuff in the areas you're not sure on, feel free to pm me any direct questions.

As far as your fear of lye in your spice, I'd say that's generally a fairly irrational fear, unless something goes quite wrong. My first extractions were all A/B with several re-x's for purity and I never had the slightest issue with lye. I'd say, once you're at the point where you're pulling the naptha off your basified rootbark solution, you'll smack your forehead with your palm and say "Duh, that's why it'll be obvious if there's lye in the solution" there's two completely seperate layers that are easy as pie to distinguish visibly and only one of them (your basified rootbark, the dark lower layer) has lye in it.

The fact I sound like I don't know what I am doing is probably the fact my english isn't the best there is . The hard thing is to combine the dutch chemicals en the english teks. Thank you for the tips! I will keep them in mind and show you guys the result

Cool that it's your own place. It's important to be able to work on an extraction without interruption or worry.
The ammonia wash has been problematic and has known to cause loss of yield. Many teks will now explicitly tell you to forget the ammonia wash.

To make sure you have a clean product, work clean. Be patient and work clean. Use the best possible instruments, I can for example seriously recommend a separation funnel. A Buchner funnel can also come in handy, but it's a nice to have. What I love is my sep funnel, my Buchner funnel with Qualitative and Quantitative filter papers and my DURAN® filtering bottles.

If you have a sep funnel you can really be sure not to contaminate your pulls with lye. I don't like the turkey baster at all.

Get all your kit ready, visualize the process.

If you do end up with lye in the pull or in your final product, re-crystalize, it's far safer.

Which tek are you using? It sounds like you are going for a STB?

STB it is. The ammonia part is from a tek on this site so I thought it was OK to do as long you use cold ammonia. But I just got rid of the ammonia on my 'to buy' list. I've read teks, and found a great dutch one with pictures. But the guy describing it uses ammonia and has a nice yield, so when I was browsing the teks on this site and found out some teks here use it to it was a normal step to take.

Maybe I should make pics as well so you guys can see how 'well' I do
