Citrus limon (Lemon) Phenomenon—A Review of the
Chemistry, Pharmacological Properties, Applications
in the Modern Pharmaceutical, Food, and Cosmetics
Industries, and Biotechnological Studies

Marta Klimek-Szczykutowicz, Agnieszka Szopa
and Halina Ekiert

Abstract: This review presents important botanical, chemical and pharmacological characteristics of Citrus limon (lemon)—a species with valuable pharmaceutical, cosmetic and culinary (healthy food) properties. A short description of the genus Citrus is followed by information on the chemical composition, metabolomic studies and biological activities of the main raw materials obtained from C. limon (fruit extract, juice, essential oil). The valuable biological activity of C. limon is determined by its high content of phenolic compounds, mainly flavonoids (e.g., diosmin, hesperidin, limocitrin) and phenolic acids (e.g., ferulic, synapic, p-hydroxybenzoic acids). The essential oil is rich in bioactive monoterpenoids such as D-limonene, β-pinene, γ-terpinene. Recently scientifically proven therapeutic activities of C. limon include anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, anticancer and antiparasitic activities. The review pays particular attention, with references to published scientific research, to the use of C. limon in the food industry and cosmetology. It also addresses the safety of use and potential phototoxicity of the raw materials. Lastly, the review emphasizes the significance of biotechnological studies on C. limon.

Keywords: lemon; chemical composition; biological activity; cosmetic applications; phototoxicity; biotechnological studies

Lemons are great!

Yes, surely great! And what diversity!

I really like Yuzu and hope to get a plant to try at my zone (guess I have to take it in during winter).

Also regarding being on this forum, it's intriguing how Grape changes the metabolism of different substances.

Thanks for the post!

Lemons literally saved my life. Lemon juice in water was the only thing I could drink (not even plain water) when I experienced severe liver failure some years ago. Before that point I had already accepted that my life was over. It's crazy how it was, thinking back to that time.

Yuzu oil does smell wonderful! I was looking at some kumquat plants last year but they were too expensive.

I pondered for some time before realising you were referring to grapefruit. It's quite important to know that grapefruit contains a very powerful inhibitor of CYP3A4, a key enzyme in the metabolism of numerous drugs.

And thanks for the great pictures. That Buddha's hand lemon is pretty unbelievable!

Great to see that you got throught it. I've not had any kind of that sereve illness but in gereral its somewhat strange in retrospect to think about what you've fellt and experienced, the different lifes within ones life. .. and yet life continues.

I love kumquats! To just take a whole fruit and much away. There are also alot of varieties that I some day hope to get the chance of trying. The trees also seems quite cold hardy.

Grapefruit–drug interactions - Wikipedia

Yes Grape/Grapefruit, I get it wrong sometimes. It's interesting that such a common fruit (and juice) can have that effect (and without warning signs).
