Low Oder Mineral Spirits Vs. Naptha?

Migrated topic.

I was wondering if Low Oder Mineral Spirits is a suitable substitution to naptha in the Norman Tek? Would I still be able to freeze precipitate out the DMT Freebase in the end?

I think so, here is an article i found about the specific ingredients of both Is isopropyl alcohol the same as mineral spirits? - Answers not sure about its validity though. From what I can gather, the DMT Freebase will be soluable in the Low Oder Mineral Spirits (to what extent, I'm not sure) but I am worried that the DMT will not freeze precipitate out of the solution. Does anyone have specific experience using Low Oder Mineral Spirits?

I've never used it, but it has been reported that DMT is even less soluble in odorless mineral spirits than it is in naptha, so it should freeze precip really well if you can get the alks into it in the first place. It might be good for heated pulls, I don't recall anyone trying that. Forget about evaporating it - it'll take forever.

There should be a thread on this from long long ago. Pics of xtals posted from Low Oder Mineral Spirits.

never tried myself its properties did not seem conductive for my purposes.

i havnt tried barolotine low oder spirit. But i have tried b&q white spirit, which is a turpintine substitue. Its a heavy form of naptha. Its troublesome after freeze precipitation, which iave had no problem with. The first 2 pulls of 150ml left the bottom and sides of my collection jar complelty covered in crystal.

After pouring off all the solvent, enough remained on the crystals that once it warmed up it would disolve the dmt again and you'd have to evaporate the rest. Evaporating white spirit takes ages.

I improved slightly by draining of as much of the solvent, then putting it back in the freezer for 12 hours to get more solvent away from the crystals then once out leaving it upside for a few hours. then turning it right way up to evap the rest away.

I dont know if the low oder stuff is any easier to evap. If you have a fan, use it as that should help evap the white spirit quicker.

With my pulls i didnt evap any of the solvent, just straight into the freezer and 12 hours later, jar full of crystals. The colder the better, ive seen the best results with very very cold. 1 person on another forum reported upto 2% yeild of pretty clean crystals usijng a freezer that was -20c.

Clue: naphtha is another general term for mineral spirits. Various grades of each eyist, "low odour" ('odor/oder') being a special grade typically reserved for thinning oil paints.

Its utility is dependant on its relative volatility, and the ability to evaporate cleanly. This is something you'd have to investigate specifically with regard to whatever specimen of low odour mineral spirits you may happen to have, although I suspect its rate of evaporation will be too low to be of significant use for DMT extractions even if it did (as would seem likely) support freeze precipitation.

If it were to be the only choice of bulk solvent, but a small amount of properly volatile solvent was available, the LOMS could be used for pulls and then directly backsalted with acetic acid for a mini A/B cycle to get pulled into the quick-evaporating solvent for crystallisation.

Further options exist if the latter step isn't possible.
