Effects of chocolate on cognitive function in healthy adults: A systematic review and meta-analysis on clinical trials

"Cognitive function is defined as performance in objective tasks that need conscious mind effort. It has been shown that consuming foods rich in flavanols causes neurobiological effects and improves learning, memory, and global cognitive function.

"of the initial 340 articles identified, seven trials met the eligibility criteria. Chronic chocolate intake significantly reduced executive function time (WMD: -11.77, 95% CI: -22.49, -1.05, p = 0.03) of the participants. Further, the language and executive function (WMD: 6.38, 95% CI: 5.97, 6.80, p < 0.001) was raised by 6.38 times after the intervention with chocolate."

"It is concluded that daily consumption of cocoa may provide short and middle-term effects on young adults and make them better cognitive performance in learning, memory, and attention."

Chocolate is psychoactive. Anandamide is contained in chocolate, anandamide is from the sanskit word Ananda which mean inner bliss. Anandamide interacts with endocannabinoid receptors in the brain, the same receptors that THC interacts with. Chocolate can elevate the mood. I often recommend chocolate and bananas to someone who is feeling down. Potassium in bananas has been found to relieve anxiety and regulate adrenaline. The two combined during a panic attack can be of tremendous help. I often have received weird looks with the recommended combo. It is natural food medicine.

I’ve gotten into making very strong and bitter hot chocolate. Usually use ~1.5 cups of whole milk, 6 tablespoons pure 100% cacao powder, shake or two of cinnamon, and add just a touch of honey for sweetness. As someone who is somewhat sensitive to caffeine and tends to get anxiety with higher doses, this beverage provides a much warmer more euphoric feeling. One thing to note is that not all cacao sources are created equal and many are tested with high levels of heavy metal or other contaminants. Best to do some research if you are consuming it on a regular basis.
