Newbie Questions/Cyb's tek

Hello my Nexus people,

I'm in the middle Cyb's tek and have some questions about magnetic stirrer use.

Here's the run-down...

100g ACRB
2 hr HCL soak while stirring => Ph 3
Salt added about 40g
2 hr basic soak => Ph 13 (then put in fridge for 2 days due to my schedule)
Pulling with 50 mL hot naphtha, currently Aq layer still cold from fridge - shake, separate with light stir, repeat 5x

My question is, I'm at about 1100 mL of liquid including NPS and I'm getting an emulsion (which I've never experienced before)

What is the cause of this? Will it go away with light stirring over time? Should I not stir lightly? Should I let emulsion completely go away before shakes?

Any input would be appreciated.

What happens to the hot solvent when it hits the cold aq layer?
Theres your problem.

You should have a basic understanding of how the tek works, why the chemicals used are used in the amounts given, & how to combat small problems like emulsions before smoking anything you extract.
Take the time to run through the tek a couple times until your comfortable & its working correctly, then learn to add a cleanup step(s) at the end.

Your absolutely right concombres, I think there needs to be some kind of test or something set up in the styles of the surveys that would check the knowledge of basic chemistry and of the most common teks and and maybe solutions to basic/common problems. Or a requirement to read all stickys, something. Just my 2 cents. As for OP how many extraction have you done since you mentioned you've never encountered this, just out of curiosity.

Why?
Personally i didn`t have any problems with cold solution.

Come on Spaced Out 2 , don't pull rank as it wasn't to long ago that you were asking questions or advice .....checking people's knowledge of chemistry come on , I no nil to nothing about chemistry but yet I can pull an Tek of with the best of them & that's down to practise ......

I have no rank, but as for asking questions I think maybe pertaining to changa quantities, or maybe asking what tek someone used. I was agreeing with concombres from another post. Plus I read all I could before starting extracting and didn't deviate from it in the slightest because when you do that's when you start running into problems. I'll encourage everyone to extract no problems there, but before you do you have got to do your homework and be able to fix problems that are very basic. Keeping your basic solution cold and adding hot solvent is not in that tek, so it was deviated from and a problem occured. Emulsion has been covered so many times that almost everyone should be able to solve it. This tells me that all the homework isn't done. No pun intended towards you adventurer, keep trying and you'll get it figured out I'm just in a stinky mood:!: oh by the way if an emulsion occurs most of the time you can just let it sit and it will resolve itself in less than 24hrs at room temp.

You're right, I probably know a lot more about chemistry than a lot of people who give me advice on here.

And you could try adding some saturated hot saline solution to the mix, I had an emulsion yesterday and it seemed to partially break it up, but not fully. Plus a little extra saline solution will do no harm to the mix so if it doesn't work it will have no effect on the mix.

Thanks to all for the responses. I want everyone to know that, while I've done significant amounts of research, I still like to ask questions when I'm not certain. Mostly, I believe in the people that are on the Nexus and want to get the tips and hints so I may better my understanding. This was my second extraction. The first yeilded a goo but this one was nice yellow crystals (actually there were thousands of tiny white crystals that formed, but when scraped up, mixed with what stuck to the bottom. All in all, it went very well. I did not use a cleanup step until I experimented pulling the basic solution with xylene and got more goo. After that, I just re-X by dissolving in hot Nap and left the red goo at the bottom. This was still not a very good final outcome and I will never do it again. Probably NMT and I prefer DMT. Anyway, thanks again for the help. I will definitely be taking the advice on the cleanup steps as I realize the importance of purity now.
