No precipitation of harmalas

I cannot reply in the section where I found the tek for this, this one. I followed it to the letter, however my results are way different. I used 50 grams of caapi vine. I did 3 30 minute boils using distilled water and white vinegar. I boiled down to a manageable volume but I went too far and took it down to 200ml, so I put 200ml of distill water in to make the recommended 400ml. I then took 5 grams of NaOH in 50mls of distilled water and mixed with the brew, mixing every few minutes. My brew was very dark and very clear from the start, never the brown cloudy liquid shown in the tek. I've had the mixture in fridge for over an hour and still no precipitate. The Ph is 12.4. Any ideas?

The brew on the left and the NaOH solution before addition on the right.

Nice labware! 8)

A friend found that he needed to put more NAOH in at this stage to get things started. He sometimes uses up to about twice what is recommended before precipitation will start. I know nothing about nothing, but I imagine it's to do with the amount of acid you put in at the previous step.

But you say your PH is already high, so I don't know....but in your position I would whack in more NAOH and then do more rinses than recommended after that.

But gibran should be along in a minute to give you a more authoritative verdict.

Right you are! :)

@ reDEEMed: It’s possible that your caapi is just very weak. Strong caapi is clear when boiling, but gets very cloudy upon cooling. I’ve always taken that as an indicator of strong caapi (I could be wrong, because I actually don’t know what it is that causes the cloudiness.)

Anyhow, you can try adding more NaOH as suggested, and allow the solution to settle in a refrigerator for 12+ hours. If there’s still no precipitate settling, then there’s probably nothing there to precipitate.

Also, if you didn’t discard your caapi, try doing a few additional boils. Even though most of the alkaloids seem to go into solution in the first few boils, it doesn’t hurt to boil longer, especially with weak caapi.

Thanks for the advice, gibran. I did infact save the caapi material and already planned to reboil it with a more concentrated vinegar (I freeze distilled the bottle I have after I saw my poor results). I will also try the more NaOh and report back here with my results, thanks for both the excellent tek and the advice!

Lemeni, thanks. I got a bunch of new stuff I've barely played with yet. I take pics of everything lol. I have some nice pics from my last two dmt extractions.

My glass gives me wood....and drugs :D

endlessness: Just saw that I didn't answer your other question, I have never consumed caapi at all. My vine came from an aya kit.

Just an update- I've been busy with other projects lately and since I was so unimpressed with the alkaloid content of the vine I had, I just dumped the tea yesterday along with several other in process extractions lol. I just don't have time for them right now. I did buy me a couple rue plants and they do love life. Can't remember the exact kind, but they are rue. More than that there is a store that caters to people who practice witchcraft and whatnot about two blocks from here. I went in the other day and bought a couple ozs of goat rue or some shit lol. We'll see how that provides, I was told the dried herb was pretty potent. If nothing else the known high quality stuff is cheap online.

Maybe when these other projects wind down a bit I'll pick this back up. I really do want some changa :d

Thanks everyone for your help, especially you gibran, nice tek!

Okay, good to know. It was on the shopping list for another reason, which is the reason I got it. I did think that I was killing two birds with one stone, though. I guess not. Thanks for the info. Whenever I get the time to go after this again I will spend some time researching it, that's for sure. I would have not even tried it yet had I not been given all that dried caapi vine.

Thanks again!
