Noman Tek Help

Good Morning,

On his first extraction SWIM used Noman's tek with the following constituents:

40g Lye
40g Mimosa Hostilis (MH)(jurema incense)
900ml Water
75ml Naptha per pull (4 pulls totals)
Freezer temp between 0 and -10

After 12 hours in the freezer there does not appear to be any crystals in the solvent collection jars or any "paste" as referenced in the Tek. Upon review of the tek and his application, I don't see where he went wrong. My only guess is perhaps the agitation process could have been longer. He rolled the large MH solution on the floor for 1 minute and allowed it to rest 1 minute before re-agitating. (3 agitations as prescribed).

Presently he is confused and any suggestions or advice is greatly appreciated.

That sounds like a lot of solvent per pull. The tek mentions a 1:1 ratio between MHRB and naphtha, and notes suggest even that might be too much.

In order to obtain a freeze precipitation, you need a certain concentration of alkaloids in the solvent. If the solution is not concentrated enough, you might get no precip at all.

I would suggest to do a partial evaporation of the solvent. Reduce it to half the amount, then place back in freezer. It should become cloudy within an hour after that.

Your freezer doesn't sound cold enough. I would also suggest evapping half of your solvent as 300ml seems like a lot for such a small extraction. You should expect around 400mg of spice from that. Good luck!

Thank you all for your assistance. He's excited to try the evaporation and will update on the progress.

Correct me if I am wrong, but naptha should evaporate at room temperature, correct?

Correct. Just leave it preferably in a dark protected place, so no dust gets inside as it evaporates. You can cover it with a porous layer (paper tissue, not too thick cloth) or partially covered with a lid.

And a little fan can speed up the process, but waiting has its charm.

Good luck.

After evaporating the naptha down he did a refrigerator/freezer recrystalization. He was left with a rock hard crystaline deposit at the bottom of the glass. He recrystalized again and was left with the same result.

Any thoughts?
