Oops..too much heat? no yield

Ok, so silvester may have botched this one... he boiled some water, let it cool a little (not much) added lye, did the np extraction ended up with yellowish np then freeze precip... nothin. Safe to say that HOT nearly boiling water was a bad idea... anyway, any hope in salvaging this? *head hangs low*

Hot water shouldn't destroy the alkaloids. What can happen is that a higher solution temperature might push other plant oils into the solvent as well.

The solvent might not be saturated enough for fp. Have you tried to do a partial evaporation of the pulled solvent, say to one half of volume, or until it starts getting cloudy, and then fp again?

Hmm.. the first pull was quite milky when extracted it, it did clear up after a bit. Tweedy only used .5 ml to 15ml base solution. Could plant oils make the freeze precip more difficult? Bugsy will try to evap and see... thanks

Don't add lye to hot/warm water. It causes an exothermic reaction and produces its own heat. Adding lye to warm water could cause boil over.

Well, looks like Wile E. Coyote may have botched this one... Evaped down to about 1/3, no cloudy solution. Freeze yielded maybe, and being generous with the maybe, 30mg of yellow mini crystals. The jar does have a very strong deemster smell and has some residue that Marvin Martian will probably redissolve into some Naptha and mix with some mint or something and dry for some enhanced leaf. Still have a pull sitting in the base, maybe there's a little more there.

Either way, lesson learned. The only difference between this extraction and a few previous very successful ones was the boiling hot water (yes, never do that--20/20) and the MHRB which came from a different vendor. Oh well, only 2oz, so no major loss. Chalk it up to experience. Elmer J. Fudd will certainly enjoy what he did get and THAT in the end is priceless!

Sounds like bad mimosa, then, because boiling water does not break down the alkaloids. But as it has been said before, add lye to cold/room temp water slowly, not because of hurting the alkaloids but simply because you dont want the water to boil suddenly and/or the container break possibly make a big mess.

You should evap the naphtha all the way and see what you have left anyways. Plus maybe there's something significant in that small amount of residue.

Also check the FAQ regarding poor yield/freeze precip.

Very well could be the case... and despite the err in judgment foghorn added the lye VERY slowly...but still, big dumb chicken. The rest was evaped down to a yellow oil that smells very strong like the deem, so that is definitely getting added to leaf. What did come out of the precip looks and smells wickedly potent, so that will undoubtedly make the chicken fly. He's quite excited to try it and will report back when he does. :thumb_up:

HOLD THE PHONE FOLKS! Chicken little got very nice crystals off the pull he let sit in the base for two days!!! Looks like it just needed some time to marinate.

Also, made an observation regarding the evap process and letting it get down in volume until it turns milky, Dafy never saw that until he applied a little cooler temperature like blowing cool air on it and then definitively after sitting in the freezer for a minute or two. Seems like the "milkiness" won't really show if it's warm or room temp.. seem consistent with others' experience??
