Adding salt will encourage the layers to seperate. If there's just not enough water in there, adding some more of that could encourage the stuff to seperate too.
Yeah, if your're doing a STB, more water is definitely needed.
Add another 1/2 gallon of warm water, run everything through a strainer wait overnight and see what happens.
