Psychedelic adverse effects

If anyone has had any adverse effects following the use of psychedelics post it here. This means; Anxiety, depression, paranoia, delusions etc...

I also want to distinguish between those using the psychedelic for spiritual/knowledge/healing reasons based on clear intent and those wanting to trip out.

just asking, but how does one discern the difference between healing and learning and being spiritual...and tripping out? seems that one view is that these things could be all descriptions of the same experience. the adverse effects for someone could be simply part of the whole process for another. another view is that any intent, whether devout and balanced or idle and careless, could be seen as a unintended limiting factor.

Touche! I also agree that any effects experience after taking psychedelics could be simply the something you have opened and that is still being healed. You must push through and take it again to complete the process. When Stanislav Grof did the LSD studies, the people often times got a lot worse before they got better mentally. When I say tripping out I ment taking them for simple enjoyment, recreation, to laugh.

Following a frightening DMT experience I had in early January, I experienced an increase in anxiety similar I would imagine to what one would experience after a traumatic experience such as an accident. I noticed I startled more easily, had a vague feeling of anxiety and slight depression from time to time, and in general did not have as much self-confidence as normal. This lasted about 6 weeks, gradually decreasing in intensity until I could no longer notice it.

With mushrooms, which is my preferred psychedelic which I use on average a few times a year, I do notice what some might consider a negative effect the first day or two following usage. I know a lot of people report an afterglow, but my experience is different. I tend to feel a bit overwhelmed. Kind of like being at work and getting assigned a big new project. The feeling is like "Wow, so much work to be done, better get to it now!". I wouldn't really call it a negative feeling, but it is not a feeling of bliss or afterglow that I see many others report. Then once I get started on all the changes I realize I need to make, I feel a strong sense of accomplishment in the following days and weeks.

Fifteen years ago I had a sheet of LSD and was taking it every few days. One night I took few hits and went to a Pink Floyd laser light show in Manhattan. That was always great. Afterwards they had a grunge show and the dark and deathly sounds of Alice in Chains' song Them Bones put me in a bad spot. There were skulls everywhere in that planetarium. I ran out.

Later on that night, my friend and I parked my car and went for a walk in a strange neighborhood. We walked until the sun came up and we were still tripping hard. Eventually we decided to go home but couldn't find my car. We just wandered the whole day looking for my damn car. I had a part time job and this was the first time in five years that I missed work. I had to call my mom to come and get me. Well, the shit hit the fan and my parents flipped the fuck out when I admitted to tripping. My trip morphed into a full blown psychosis where I just lost my mind and was having paranoid delusions.

At first my parents were just mad but after a day they realized that I was psychologically messed up. I was convinced the newspaper and television stories were about my life. I had all sorts of just screwed up and twisted thoughts. They took me to a few psychiatrists but a few of them thought I was faking it. Others were worried that I did some permanent damage. It was terrifying and I thought I was going to be retarded for the rest of my life. After seven days of my mom just sitting with me and talking with me I came out of it. I swore off all drugs after that. It wasn't until a year and a half ago that I tripped for the first time on oral DMT.

That week of psychosis was the most terrifying and frightening time of my life. I almost had my whole life slip through my hands. I think the only thing I learned from it was that these drugs have the potential to fuck things up. Granted, as a kid I had no idea as to the beneficial aspects and growth opportunities of these drugs, I just used them for fun.

I think that the experience of missing work, losing my car, and having my parents find out about my drug use was a sort of traumatic moment in my life. It triggered the slip into that psychosis. Still, when I take psychedelics today that experience is always lurking in the background. By the way, I have no history of mental illness in the family and have not had any other psychological issues before or after that event.

Tick tock, tick tock, each trip always scares me a bit because now a weeklong psychosis would really mess things up. The stakes are so much higher now that I am an adult with a career and responsibilities.

Ever since my traumatic bad trips everytime I do a psychedelic Ig et anxiety the day after but only at night. It goes away by the day after.


Do you still trip even though you had that tough experience with psychosis?

sometimes when i use to much psychdelics i get a little depression but its just a day thing i think its beacuse i get nostalgic

I got depersonalization/derealization after my first DMT journey. It was all a part of a transformation process the way I see it, and it is mostly gone now. Either that, or I have gotten so used to it that I don't remember the difference.

It is indeed part of the transformation process, look into shamanism....it can be scary tho which sucks

I am familiar with this thing as a process/state of mind in several spiritual practices, yes. Very interesting, and I feel honored to have walked around in this peculiar state of mind. In the beginning it was pretty scary and I was seriously worried about my own sanity, but I started to understand, accept and adapt as time went by. I guess you're personally familiar with it?

See thats where im at. The fear. I had a series of bad trips that obviously opened something up in my head thatI wasn't ready for and now im trying to get rid of that fear soo I can once again, take the medicine. But I think ive come to terms that that fear wont go away and that I should just take the mushroom or ayahuasca and try to survive.

I’ve got to say that is REALLY STUPID. If you were that wasted on some RC (yes, I highly doubt it was LSD because you can’t take LSD that often and have it work that well) and actually driving your car you were endangering other people while driving intoxicated.

If you do things like that while intoxicated, you are a danger to everyone else and you should NOT be allowed to use any drugs at all, not even alcohol. That kind of behavior kills people.

I was a teen once, but I would never drive while drunk or intoxicated like that. That's irresponsible, and being a teen is not an excuse for that.

I'm glad you don't do things like that anymore. Imagine how you’d feel if you accidentally killed someone while driving intoxicated. The thought of that alone should be enough to prevent people from driving while intoxicated. I don’t understand why anyone would ever do that no matter what age they are.

I agree.... also to be noted psychedelics arent for fun, THEY CAN BE AT TIMES, but its all about responsibility.Taking psychedelics and going to the planterium is dumb imo. You would jsut asking for your ass to be kicked.

As a kid before the internet I had no concept of psychedelics as something other than fun. Everyone I knew just did it to see funny colors and cartoon like reality. My trips at the planetarium were always intense and amazing but I didn't realize that I was just scratching the surface of what these chemicals have to offer.

It was about twenty years ago for me, but I also used to take LSD and go to the planetarium for the Pink Floyd laser show (in San Fransisco, not Manhattan). I didn't lose my car because I didn't have one.
I must say it was thouroughly enjoyable at the time. Teenagers are just teenagers, ya know?

haha i like that one. He's right. Though it wasnt my grandmother. And it was even more ugly.

When i was a teenager cannabis caused me some serious problems, resulting in serious depression. Yes very psychedelic in its special way. But i have to add that since i have learned how cannabis changes the perspective and more important how to deal with this, i find the plant very usefull (and easy) for reflection. Allows me to sit back, look around and think about it in new ways. Nice minitrips

I Agree Virola, Cannabis is another healing plant to be used with respect that can provide limited insights.
