Real Proper hip hop, YES or NO?

I like to think of outkast as different from mainstream rap, they do tend to bounce back to gangsta rap, but in all fairness they crawled out of the ghetto, so its kinda expected. Goddy Mob is pretty kewl to me also, they rap gangsta, but also real world issues. Here's some song i like.

Have been a fan of hip hop for a few years now.

I love Def Jux (sadly they are quitting for some time). The cold Vein from Can ox is a classic to me.

But i can't believe nobody mentioned SAGE FRANCIS when talking about good hip hop??????

I used to listen to a lot of Rap/Hip-hop, I used to love DMX (his first album was the best), listen to a lot of Wu-tang etc. It wasn;t long after 50-cent came out that I got tired of it all, same old crap over a different beat. My mate used to come up to me:

"Yo you heard the new song by The Game??"

"No, but let me guess, he talks about how he has a nice car, he has loads of bitches, he will shoot you if you mess with him, he has/does deal crack/cocaine, he's got loads of money, lots of jewels, he likes going to clubs and drinking expensive champagne, at some point he will remark how he has a general dislike for 50 cent"

Naturally, I would be right. The only part I can respect about hip-hop these days is the production because a lot of the time the beat will sound really good, then some idiot has to ruin it by yacking over it with topics such as those listed above.

I rarely listen to much anymore, aside from Canibus as it stimulates the brain cells somewhat, but for the large part I've gone back to rock/metal music as I love playing it on guitar :)

No mention of The Roots? Damn. The Roots are hip hop at it's finest. I mean, come on, a full band (that plays kick ass jazz) and they flow like crazy, that's nuts.

What they call hip hop is simply Pop music (or Hip Pop). It is what it is, lots of people like it, but it is NOT hip hop. Hip hop was a revolutionary form of music that was about art and lyrical style and skills, about struggle and uplifting, anti-establishment to it's core. This new "hip pop" is all about money and supporting the establishment, about how great it is to be rich and violent, it is sociopathic. "Hip pop" is, in fact, anti- HIP HOP!

I sound like an old man, "What're you kids listenin' to these days?" But for real, if people like "hip-pop" that's fine with me, but do not call it hip hop. Hip hop is dead, except for some underground stragglers still hanging on (and good for them, but they will never get the attention they deserve), and we should respect it's memory.

all of them have weak flow.

people are still dabbling with beats; with the incorporation of electronic music elements and off-beat syncopation, wonk was born in the summer of '08. now you have a whole different element of hip-hop that is being slept on.
most heads have never even heard of Merck Records, which churned out glitch-hop from 2001-2006.

First of all, Diddy? He's not even a rapper, he's a wack ass executive who sneaks onto all his artists albums. Jay Z is wack too. Nas though, Nas back in the day had some REALLY good shit. The whole first album, and here and there on his newer albums. Yeah, he's mainstream, but that is not an automatic disqualification.

I edited my post two or three up to add a lot more songs in case anyone missed it.

Hmm, well I've never heard of her so I looked her up. I wouldn't say people would lose respect for you per se, just your taste in "hip hop".:lol: Just kidding man, but, uh, no, not my style.
 
I like the light heartedness cheekiness that comes with Sov.

She used to MC on drum and bass when she was 16 and I always thought there was something really... different about a 4' 10" white girl MCing to the gangster masses of London :)
 
Urgh, lady sovereign summaises everything that is wrong with today's youth in the UK.

Forgot about Immortal Technique, first heard Dance with the Devil that a friend told me to sit and listen all the way through. Boy did I not see THAT coming, sometimes though the amount of mixtapes kind of puts me off so I haven't heard of all his suff but for the majority I do like it.

I think Nas' early stuff was good, songs like 'i gave you power' and 'shootouts' are good, I liked the Stillmatic album but very little after that. I've never given Jay-Z the time of day, always thought he was boring.
 
Haha no but I have been subjected to the earache that her music produces so my judgement is based upon personal experience.
