recrsytal and carb wash had weird results.

So I decided.to attempt.my.first recrystallize with about a gram of really yellow sandy like powder. I followed the tek to a t besides the fact that I also used some sodium carbonate in order to help clean it up better.

The results where odd as I thought I'd get back white crystal. The yield was of a more crystalline nature.but it was still very yellow.

Does anyone know why this would be?, when I did the process a lot of impurities fell to the bottom.of the naphtha before I even added the carb solution. I let it separate. Pulled off the NPS and froze to yield a very yellow product but as I said its now crystalline instead of sandy.

Is this normal

Read the wiki page on recrystallization. Recrystallizing alone won't remove the color.

There are numerous reasons why a DMT can be yellow. 1. It has plant oils in it. 2. It has dmt n-oxide in it. 3. It has NMT in it 4. It has base soup contaminates.

So, doing a sodium carbonate wash only cleans it if you have yellow dmt from reason 4. Normally if your DMT is orange, amber, brown, or black then it is because you have alot of base soup in your DMT. If you do a sodium carbonate wash it makes all of the base soup(water/lye/bark/salt) go into the water and the sodium carbonate keeps the solution basic.

Your clean using soda carb showed that your DMT is not yellow from contaminates. You also tried to do a re-x with a shot glass and what not? If you did that and it was still extremely yellow then you did it incorrectly. During this procedure when you have your shot glass with your spice in it you will see some stuff fall to the bottom. That is also the same stuff that is cleaned in a soda carb wash, making a soda carb wash redundant. You will also see a dark layer of yellow and then your NPS should be clear on top. When the dark yellow layer is in the liquid phase you should NOT disturb the solution. The dark yellow is all of the plant oils and dmt. The dmt will naturally migrate into the NPS whereas the plant oils require a little bit of agitation to transfer into the NPS. Make sure when you seperate the two layers keep from grabbing any of the yellow layer.

Thanks for the info. But that's just the thing. When I did the rextal the NPS layer stayed yellow. I saw all the stuff fall to the bottom as you say. But there was no yellow plant oil layer and clear NPS layer. It was just a yellow NPS layer with the gunk that fell to the bottom.

I was told when doing rextal to get it in and out. Meaning you don't have to wait long. You see stuff fall to the bottom and then your good.

Do you think maybe I didn't wait long enough for the plant oils to separate?

When you did the re-X, did you use fresh or re-used NPS?

There has to be two seperate layers of oil and naptha. How do you do your re-x? You take a shot glass, then drop in your spice, then put in your solvent, then apply a small amount of heat. It sounds like you are apply naptha the is already warmed and it is warmed too much so all the oils and spice instantly absorbs into it. Am I correct?

Yes all teks I've read say use hot naphtha. I tried again using just warm and more falls to the bottom but the whole NPS solution is yellow and stays that way. I'm assuming if I freeze I'll end up with the same really dark yellow xtals.

Warm naptha is to be used, not hot. And yellow naptha will mean yellow spice, to a certain degree, depends why its yellow.

Don't heat up your Naphtha beyond 45° it'll melt the impurities that you are trying to seperate.
