recrystallization question

Hi all, first post here :d

So afoaf extracted some spice with ronsonol lighter fluid (he lives in canada, VM&P isn't available there), following the recommendations of some teks. He found out after extracting that the solvent leaves a really thin layer of crap after evap, so he decided that it was mandatory to recrystallize.

However he is not able to find some Heptane where he lives but he may have access to pure petroleum ether and thought it could be a good solvent because it is super clean and similar to naphta/heptane in composition. So here is his question : Would this be a great solvent to recrystallize? If yes, can he perform the recrystallization with the tek explained in the "Glass shard recrystallization pictorial" thread or would he have to use a different method because he is not using heptane?

Also he is worried because the datasheet for the petroleum ether he wants to use indicates that it can start to boil at ~30-35 degrees C. From his understanding of the recrystallization tek, the solvent isn't supposed to boil while in the heat bath so he is afraid that too much pressure builds and blows the jar up due to the low BP of the said solvent.

So does he have to worry about all this or should he just go ahead and perform the tek as it is written??

Thanks!! Eagerly waiting for your answers!!

AFAIK pet ether is equivalent to naphtha, and if it evaps clean you can use that, yeah.

the principle of recrystalization is the same for heptane/hexane/naphtha/pet ether.... The boiling shouldnt affect anything. Redissolve in minimum amount of warm solvent (around 30ml per gram of impure product), decant away from the goo that will probably stay in the bottom, and into the freezer for precipitation. You can add a bit more of solvent (like 5-10ml) to the goo to pick up the last bits of DMT that might be there, but this will also pick up more impurities so freeze this separately if you do.
