Rooting the bottom of San Pedro branches?

I've gotten several pieces of San Pedro cactus I'd like to root. I have a couple questions that I haven't been able to find answers to.

Most of the pieces are the bottom of cut off branches, so there is less/no area to callus. Is this fine, or should I cut the bottom end off?

Also many of the pieces have a Woody broken off stem protruding from the bottom where the branches were attached to the main cactus, should these woody bits be trimmed back flush with the cactus?

They'll chuck out roots when they're ready, I guess trimming of the raggedy bits might mean less things to pick up rot later. It takes a fair effort to get them to rot anyhow, IME.

Thanks, think I'm going to trim the more rough Woody bits back.

I'm guessing that I don't have to reset my callus timer unless I hit soft flesh.
