Publication SEEKING CONTRIBUTORS - Issue 3 Outline

The Nexian Magazine is in the early stages of production after a ten-year hiatus, and I'm very glad to be getting this project back on the rails. However, in order to get this thing to the finish line, we need contributors. Before I get into the development schpiel, PLEASE CONSIDER WRITING AN ARTICLE! If you have a few hours to take out of your weekend to write something you're passionate and knowledgable about (that is in some way related to psychedelics), it would be invaluable to this project, and immortalized in this publication. This can be anything. Some ideas include - trip reports, gardening/environmentalism, advancements in science, ART, photographs, interviews, history, poetry, harm reduction, etc. Many members have posted some fascinating and in-depth topics that could absolutely be turned into worthwhile articles as well. I would also suggest looking through the two previous issues of The Nexian for some inspiration (as well as to not repeat the same ideas).

In terms of other roles, we need people who will be willing to write, proofread, and edit articles. But we especially need artists. The community-sourced art used in The Nexian is just as important as the articles, so any submissions of new or pre-existing Nexus-based art would be greatly appreciated.

My previous post, "Reviving the Nexian," garnered some traction and allowed me to lay a foundation for what this issue could look like. Below, I’ve listed 8 articles with descriptions of what they will contain and who I assume wants to be involved in its creation. Following in the footsteps of Issue 2, I’d like to see 5-6 more articles, for a total of 13-14. If you have any issues, changes, questions, clarifications, or suggestions, state them!! I’d love to see as much involvement in this project as possible.

Below is a rough draft of articles for Issue 3. These are subject to change.
*titles are WIPs*
  • Unraveling and Debunking DMT Myths - 15 Years of Progress at the DMT Nexus
@Transform suggested this, which I think is a great idea. Without a detailed description, I'm not sure what this will exactly look like, but it sounds like a great way to reintroduce The Nexian after all this time.

  • The Past, Present, and Future of DMT - In Conversation With Dr. Andrew Gallimore
Andrew Gallimore has stated before that he’s very receptive to interviews, and will also be releasing his third book at some point soon! (apparently discussing the history of DMT) I’ve heard many of his interviews and haven’t heard him discuss it much yet, which makes me think it’d be prime time to reach out about his upcoming book and DMT as a whole, in a similar fashion to the Strassman interview from the previous issue. (Not to mention, Andrew Gallimore is a Nexian as well)

  • Going Mainstream: The Transdermal DMT Patch
This would be based on the fascinating post from @1Starway7 . I’d like to get in touch with the pharmaceutical company behind this to get more information on where the future of DMT lies and why they pursued this invention, but I can’t make any guarantees on that front. Either way, it’d make for a fascinating article on something I haven’t seen discussed.

  • Entheogenic Parenting
Both @Subtlevibrations and @Transform have offered to contribute to an article discussing being both a parent and psychonaut. I think this is a fascinating subject, considering how sensitive the topics of ‘drug use’ and parenting combined are, and could help to dispel some misconceptions, differentiate psychedelics from other substances, and overall provide a fascinating insight into something that isn’t often discussed.

  • Psychedelic Literature and the Effort to Save the Earth - In Conversation With Jeff Vandermeer
I think it’d be pretty cool, in addition to interviewing a scientific figure, to also interview a prominent person in psychedelic art/music with each issue. (This is obviously under the very optimistic view that The Nexian will continue past the third issue.) Now, I know Alex Grey is the obvious first choice for something like that, and apparently did agree some eight years ago to an interview that didn’t(?) happen, but I think it’d be better to not put all our eggs in one basket. Gallimore and Grey would be a STACKED lineup for a single issue. Thus, I opt for Jeff Vandermeer, who is one of the most psychedelic authors there is to interview unless anybody can bring Huxley back from the dead. Vandermeer is the author of Annihilation, which has a movie adaptation you might be familiar with, and will be releasing the fourth book of that series later this year titled Absolution. He’s a very ecological writer, so I feel like it’d be valuable to stretch out a little and discuss saving the Earth, and how that relates to psychedelic writing - not to mention that like Gallimore, he doesn't seem difficult to reach, and we’d be able to get the jump on him soon before his new book releases.

  • Investigating the Shroom Boom
This suggestion from @SkunK is one that is certainly relevant, and certainly fascinating - that being the recent boom in grey-area mushroom dispensaries. This would be a great and timely topic to address. With imminent legalization drawing closer, documentation of this transition period is a vital time capsule on the current social attitude and approach towards these substances. I think there’s a lot of value in writing about this.

  • *Nexian Trip Reports*
Another nice tradition, if this project gets back on its feet, would be to feature trip reports - either brand new from a DMT-Nexus member, or hand-picked as one of the best that has been submitted in the past. Ideally, these would be centered around DMT, but depending on the length of the reports and the amount of space we have left, it'd be nice to feature other psychedelics or even highlight some more obscure and lesser-known ones.

  • In Remembrance of Roland Griffiths/Ann Shulgin
Following what Issue 2 began, I think it’s important to highlight figures in the psychedelic community that have passed on. There were two that immediately came to mind - Ann Shulgin and Roland Griffiths. Now, Griffiths passed away only a few months ago, so I think this would be reasonable to write about. Ann on the other hand passed away in 2022, but although people might consider it ‘old news’, I think it’d still be nice to make an homage to Ann as well, so if anybody has ideas on this front, please let me know. Perhaps we could save her for a later issue, or we could do a remembrance of both of them in one issue, etc. If there’s anybody else who should be featured, please bring it up.

Again, even if all these articles come to fruition, we still need more!! Anything and everything is appreciated!

I'll be reaching out to some members who have shown interest in the past about The Nexian to try and gather some more support. Also, regarding interviews, I'm very interested in a Graham Hancock and Alex Grey interview, as was the original plan for Issue 3. However, it might be better to try spacing them out between issues to maintain one big name in the psychedelic world per installment as opposed to creating one with some crazy interviews and nothing left for the hopeful next issue. Let me know what you guys think, and what artists/musicians/authors (or people in general) you'd want to see interviewed or be willing to interview yourself. I'll be reaching out soon to see what interviews I can make happen, and I'll do my best to keep people updated on how the project continues to develop!

(p.s., I would have had this posted quite a while ago if I hadn't deleted the entire thing and had to retype it all... oops😩)

Really nice project. I wish I could contribute in any way. Before I made a magazine about psychedelics, art and therapy with some friends but we never brought it to print.
But over hundred pages of interviews, articles and so on were made and are ready, only the editing was never made.
Inside there is stuff like interviews with Jim Dekorne from the entheogen review, Lukas brown, fredericke meckel Fischer, and articles about changa, jurema sagrada, psychedelic psychogeography, tlc and many more.

But would also love to write something new.

I am more versatile in gardening and the spiritual side of entheogenes, like the several syncretic pathways in South America, Voodoo or European witchcraft and the renaissance.

Could write up something and know many people who are more knowledgeable than I am.

Anyway, I dreamt lately to get more involved in journalism, and this could be a good starting point.

I would like to contribute an article on Acacias, I'm sure Acacian would be open to the idea on collaborating with me on this one.

I could also contribute an article on debunking some of the recent species that we have had lab tested recently, species like delosperma which we confirmed active but not even close to viable, it could be good to write about these speculated species that we can put to rest (at least for now/ until proven otherwise). I'd have to get some of the data off endlessness but might make for an interesting article, iirc there would be a few species to discuss.

I have a rough idea on what I would like to contribute, I’m thinking about an article on the tension between psychedelics in a research setting, the perceived benefits and evidence, and how this is used in misguided practice by quacks. And then how this practice combined with the all to common myths surrounding psychedelics then leads to the devaluation of psychedelics and the risks involved with not actively calling out these practices.

Would like to team up with others to discuss and share knowledge and write together.

I doubt I'll have results in time since it'll be another few months to gather enough material but I do plan on testing non-viridis psychotria for dmt content. The churches here in Brasil when expanding to new locations would search for local psychotria viridis often finding look alikes which were later abandoned after becoming self sufficient with viridis plantations. Some caused headaches others were just not as easy to cultivate. I've gotten two clones that have historical usage by some founders and have papers with their scientific names. One grows very quickly and the other is just different and a bit more attractive plant IMO as a house plant. (I keep seeing 'rumors' on this containing the 'most' dmt but doesn't even include dose or usage it in tea yet)

If I don't make it this time I should have some content for next issue if this continues. Most of my long term projects involve cacti and only this year including psychotria and phyllodium to test those reports of juilian since noone seems to report on it. Also since I've always been more on the tea side I've also started testing the salts of the plants that don't contain the main alkaloids responsible for the effects. I want to test psychotria non-dmt salts in the future if I am able to form any since the profile is quite 'clean'. Personally I feel many things are lost to 'pure' extracts but others say it is peusdo-effects. DMT vs Full spectrum like with rootbark

I really, really, really want to find a way to have either Dr. Nolan Williams or Dr. Robin Carhart-Harris (and in an ideal world, both) write up an article or have an interview for us. This would be absolutely tremendous and would once again prove the Nexus is the best place to learn about everything related to psychedelics. Both of these amazing people have done such an incredible work on people and advanced the field of mental health study with the help of psychedelics immensely. I already have Dr. Williams as a contact in LinkedIn, but I wonder what such a project involves. I assume they would want some kind of compensation, because people like them usually have a 100% stacked schedule with no free time to do things just for the sake of it.

In the past how has this worked? Have the prominent scientific figures that have taken part in the Nexian been paid in some way? Or has it always been out of the good of their will?

I'd love to get things going with those two people, but I want to have an idea of how it worked in the past.

@FlagellaStink, thank you for taking charge of this, and being so proactive. Absolutely lovely! ❤️

PS: Just to give some context about who those people are, here are their appearances on Dr. Andrew Huberman's podcast:
Dr. Nolan Williams: Psychedelics & Neurostimulation for Brain Rewiring
Dr. Robin Carhart-Harris: The Science of Psychedelics for Mental Health

@FlagellaStink thank you so much for taking the helm on this project and catalyzing this big wave of energy in our community. I LOVE how excited and enthusiastically everyone is approaching this project :D

Again, I would love to help bring the psychonaut parenting article to fruition. I would truthfully rather be interviewed than write it myself. I believe there are more than a few Nexian parents among us who could also add some valuable insights. @psychonuaghty is a parent as well, if I’m not mistaken.

I am happy to proof read, edit, and review any and all articles as much as my free time allows. I would also be honored to submit an experience report, or more accurately, a collection of connected experiences together as a single report.

@Nydex I am not familiar with the work of the individuals you have recommended for interview, so I wanted to thank you for including some links to their work and shedding light on their existence.

I am loving the energy this project is creating for our community :D

Peace
Sv

@FlagellaStink Did you ever take the point on this project!

I can already see the bones of a great rebirth innthenworks here.

I'd be honored to contribute any way possible to this project.

What kind of a time frame are we looking at for a deadline for vol 3 article submissions?

Wow!! That sounds incredible. Do you have any plans of finishing the project? If not, perhaps you could repurpose some of the content for new article(s), I'm sure there's a lot of valuable information in there. Either way, it seems like there's a lot you'd be able to write about, and everything you mentioned sounds like a unique addition. I'd love to see it!

And congratulations on your magazine, that sounds like an incredible amount of work.

This is some really valuable information, it'd be a perfect addition to The Nexian. It probably will have to wait for the next issue, but it's nice to know that we already have contributors for it before even beginning work. If we can maintain a steady pace and consistent volunteers, I think a bi-annual release is a realistic goal. This should give you a good few months, I'm interested to see the results!

Dr. Robin Carhart-Harris is the dream 😅 He doesn't seem as available for interviews, but I'd be thrilled if somebody managed to get a hold of him.

As for contacting the people, this is something I'd like insight on as well. I assume it's been out of good will (not to mention free publicity) in the past. My only encounter with anything like that was when I emailed Rick Strassman asking about pursuing the study of psychedelics, and he emailed me back with a really long message describing the classes he took in college and what he recommended me to major in. Point being, if they have the time, I assume most people would be pretty receptive to doing to for free. I'll just be shooting an email to Gallimore and crossing my fingers, but I think there's a good chance of success in that, especially considering he uses this site himself.

As for the more prestigious figures, maybe it'd be better to wait until we get this issue out? If we're able to get some level of success with it, the people you mentioned might be more willing to give up their time for it. That's not to put you off though, if you could get in contact with them that would be AMAZING! Hopefully somebody with more intimate knowledge of how these interviews went down will respond.

What kind of a time frame are we looking at for a deadline for vol 3 article submissions?
We're not on a time crunch, so I don't want to run this like a military base, but I also don't want to leave it open-ended and dead in the water. I think a *6* week timeframe for submissions is reasonable. That's not a rule so much as a request though. If somebody can't make their submission until after for whatever reason, I'll still be open to taking it. Again, as I've never done this before I'm not sure how long it will take to put together, and if anybody feels more time would be needed please let me know!

And thank you so much for your involvement @SkunK !

A combined collection of experiences sounds like a great idea! Those are always very fun to read.

I'll see what I can do on the psychonaut parenting interview. I might make a post to get more psychonaut parents involved and gather some community questions that could be used in a Q&A. Thank you for all your involvement! I'll try to keep you updated.

Ow that is really fast I’m not sure it’s feasible for me to deliver on that time frame, for some of the articles that involve an interview I think this might be tight to, from experience the time to organize and do an interview takes multiple weeks and then the article needs to written.

Anyway not that anyone should wait for me so if it’s 3 weeks I’ll do my best to make some time, or plan for a fourth edition. It’s good to have a deadline for things.

Yeah, I assume that some of the collaborative efforts won't be able to manage this time frame. Maybe 5 or 6 weeks would be better?

Again, this is just a way to track progress. There will need to be a lot of editing, graphic design, publishing planning, and getting art (which I assume will be the most difficult part) even after this. I'm definitely open to adding more articles even two months out, so no rush, it just depends on how much content we have and how long it takes to put it together.

*I've edited the previous reply, I think six weeks is completely reasonable, and I can continue to build the magazine as more submissions come in. Thanks for saying something

Indeed, there are some articles ready but this project was started in 2017, so many things changed and need to be updated. Yes, me and my friends would love to finish this project but we had been busy the last years with other stuff.

By the way, for the participation of prominent researchers: in my experience, they do interviews or articles for free, in exchange of at least one example in print. For them, this is also a way of advertising their research and most people on there are really passionate. I had never been asked for money for interviews.

I made a little brainstorming this afternoon. I thought on some articles that I could write or already have written:

# Jurema as a plant teacher and spiritual entity

- to examine the role that Mimosa hostillis plays in the syncretic religions of the Brazilian coast, Umbanda, Candomblé and most of all Catimbo, the jurema sagrada.

# the legal status after the internationalization of Ayahuasca

With the data collected by the ICEERs, there have been several court cases for the possession of Ayahuasca and the holding of ceremonies.
The Ayahuasca defense fund helps people involved in legal cases and share information on the topic with advocates and judges.

# Santo Daime as a new world religion

SD spread the last twenty years all over the world, with churches in Africa, Asia, the US and Europe. What is the attraction for people in this church and how did the ceremonial work evolve in contact with foreign cultures?

# The entity question from a spiritist point of view

In a large group of spiritual practices, like Santeria, Umbanda or voodoo, the heart of the ceremonial work is centered around contact and advise from entities that take the body of the medium in possession.
These build up a huge tradition of spiritual guides from the astral plane, that will give advise to the aspirants, instruct them in ritual work and learn them there songs. This colourful pattern could be helpful for every psychonaut, who is interested in the entities seen in visual states. Every spiritual branch have their own genealogical tree of spirits, and the manner how they are arranged and discovered is an interesting topic of ethnographic research.

So far what I could contribute. Let me know if a subject could be of interest for you.

I would love to see also an article about the phalaris research, something about the lesser known tryptamines and betacarbolines and why not an interview with Casey William Hardison on DMT manufacturing an philosophy.

The nexian could be a kind of status report of the main topics discussed the last years in the forum.

If social media could be seen as an indicator if societal interest, and it certainly can, there is already a huge attention on the discussions of people like Hancock, gallimore, Strassman, Rogan, Morris and so on, and I think that there is no need to repeat the subjects already covered by these people and their channels.

For example, instead of an interview with gallimore, it could probably be more interesting to have an in depth interview or a trip report from a volunteer of the dmt x project.

There are already dozens of interviews and podcast with Andrew gallimore, I like his work but I think that the psychedelic community is already aware of his stuff.

As an international forum I would love to concentrate on content from non-westener countries.

Something on anahuasca use in Sufi circles, DMT consumption in north Africa, Santo Daime in Japan or the traditional uses of acacia confusa in Chinese medicine for example.

There are members from all over the world here and this is probably our biggest force.

Then there is the analytical data and so much testing had been made by several members, these results are of huge public interest.

The questioning of myths like 5-MeO content in chaliponga or the use of delosperma and other aizocacees. These informations can easily be found here, not so outside of the nexus.

Other channels likely concentrate in therapeutic use, Ayahuasca tourism and the entity question - let us cover all the rest 😎

@FlagellaStink in regards to art, I can happily donate any of my fractal pieces if you find them palatable. If not, no hard feelings <3

Here’s a link to my digital gallery
I think the piece titled “Time” had nice symmetry that would look good in a magazine split between pages.
These are beautiful!! I'd love to add some of these in once I'm able to begin formatting the magazine and know where I'll be able to put them. I'll definitely be reaching out in a few weeks for permission and advice on using certain pieces of yours. Thank you so much for sharing.

The same goes for your friend @Nydex I think some of those would work great!
