Smoking pipe IDEA! PLEASE CHECK!

Hello,

Could people please comment on this idea I have for smoking Spice. I don't smoke anything therefore I don't own a bong or want to sandwich the spice with any herbs (for work reasons). I came across a lightbulb idea online but it looked to 'crackhead' for me, this idea uses the same principle but its a lot easier than making holes in light bulbs.

The Idea is a Test tube which as been bunged/corked.
The bung/cork has two stems for letting air in and out i.e one to suck on, one to let air in.
The stem which lets air in is closer to the bottom of the test tube, this should circulate air up from the bottom hopefully bringing smoke with it.
The stem which you suck on should not stick out past or too far past the bung/cork as to maximise air flow upwards.
The test tube will have to be heated so you may want to make a stand or hold it with tongs as it may get hot.

I would appreciate constructive comments why this may not work or ideas for improvements. I haven't smoked any spice before so someone with first hand experience can let me know if this would work or if I would be wasting my time/spice.

I think you are right Steppa. Myself and Equipotential are possibly trying to reinvent the wheel in a way, the Vaponic Vaporizer is what we are trying to achieve so why not stick with that. I think I will get the Vaponic Vaporizer, I have a while before my supplies arrive and can start cooking so I may play around with a few DIY designs just to pass the time.

Equipotential, if you do make your design keep us posted, also with any lab equipment finds which may be useful.

Agreed looper. It is pointless in some ways, especially after being shown so much awesome information. I will still attempt it, mainly because I have the equiptment already, and ill keep updating my success' and failures.

Thanks also steppa. Ill make sure to remember the airflow and aim to achieve that.

Steppa. In the design I put last night compared to one you posted, do you not think that mine will carry enough convection current around the secondary chamber? If so how could I achieve a better distribution of heat through the chamber? Should I have it not completely sealed? I have no problems doing trial and error but any extra insight will save time and spice. Cheers:thumb_up:

Hey Equipotential,

please keep in mind that I'm by no way a vaporizer specialist or something. But my advice would be to test the functionality with something other than spice first. I don't know if you smoke weed... This would be what I would use for testing. Of course you could use some other herbs for testing as well. Maybe one of those??

I personally like to experiment with selfmade vaporizers too, but just for the fun of it. At this time I'm working on a piece which utilizes a halogen bulb with adjustable ballast for setting the temperature.

But if I wanna get serious I use just a normal pipe with a piece of steel scrub mesh in it. Works like a charm. Maybe you've seen it in the "share your piece" thread.

I have seen your piece, it's a great specimen. I am new to the spice aspect of things and this is an attempt to personalise it for myself more than anything. I do smoke other herb so I will use that for test phases (I never thought of that). I appreciate your honesty in telling me you're no expert but I'm very grateful for the advice, thank you very much.

In regards to your other project, I'm an electrician by trade so if you want any advice on selection of component or wiring it would be a pleasure to help.

That is exactly the way to go imho. To set one's wits to the experience.

Thanks. So far it's working by now...more or less at least. It's all just a matter of spacings and getting the temperature right. On my last try it started burning my stuff. :p
But I think the concept itself is great because the bulb becomes hot really fast and cools down relatively fast. I just need another case/housing (which is the right word?) for it, as I made one of wood, which of course started burning too.

:surprised you don't particularly want to be burning the wood housing lol. Try a Bakelite style substance, non conductive good heat properties. If that muck heat is being generated maybe a small heat sink could be an option too.

I like the compact design! From my experience with the light-bulb, you only need the "inhale" tube. Use the 2-hole bung, but just put one tube in it. I use a broken/flame smoothed Pasteur pipette, but any type of tube will work. Try a test run with something combustible and I'll bet you clear the test-tube of smoke easily, even without the "air supply" tube. Simpler, less to break, etc. Just an idea...

EDIT: Ooooooh! Just realized this is my first comment! Longtime lurker and happy user of amazing tek info on this site... Break on through.

Equipotential, just an update. I bought a Vaponic Vaporizer as Steppa brought to my attention. I just received it and it looks like a good piece of kit, although not sure how long it will be before i break it as it does feel fragile. It is more or less what I had envisioned making, actually slightly better. Unfortunately I can't test it out yet but once I do I will let you know.
