A few months back I moved into a new Apt. It is a very nice place & is in a much, much better neighborhood than my old house.
So the new place is right off of one of the busiest streets in the city and in fact my living room window is about 10-20 feet from the street & my bedroom window is about 25+ feet away. So it is noisy!!

I prefer to experience DMT in total silence and since moving in I rarely get that chance anymore becuase of the fucking traffic noise!! The only time it is even close to quiet enough, for long enough, is like 2-3:00am and by that time I'm just too tired for it to be worthwhile. I get up around 8am for work so staying up until 3:00am usually doesn't fit into my schedule anymore. I tend to fall asleep while "calming" myself beforehand.

I've tried earplugs. Too weird once the spice starts melting into me!! Just as distracting as the damn traffic!

I've tried background music. Same thing, too distracting unless its barely audible & then it doesn't mask the traffic noise. It fact it only adds to the distraction!

I've put up some sound-dampening foam on mic stands (I work at a CD Mastering studio, so I had some available) to block the noise coming through the window. Unfortunately, traffic is low frequency noise and goes right through the foam for the most part!!

So beyond staying up until 2-3:00am, I can not seem to find a way to effectively isolate my bedroom from the noise of the busy street right outside.

It does not help that what I do for a living is analyze & evaluate sound for 6-to-14 hours a day!! I've been educated & have actively trained my ears over the last 20+ years, to understand & pay attention, in detail to whats going on dynamically in the background, as far as our hearing is concerned.
This is one thing that makes a good sound-engineer, as opposed to just a guy who can run a mixer/EQ/compressor/reverbs/etc...
But also makes me over-sensitive to the din of noise pollution in everyday modern life!!

The longer I do it, the more it effects the way I hear in everyday life situations. Which is not always a good thing! I used to love going to concerts for example, now they just fry my ears & I can't work correctly for the next week. I often leave early with a headache as well.
I'm not THAT old, but it sure makes me feel like I am, when I write that!!:x

Anyway, I cant imagine I'm the only spice-smoking-city-dweller who is bothered by a noisy neighborhood out there.

Does anyone have any ideas how to get rid of this kind of disturbance? BTW, I can't block the windows with anything but the curtains they provided, according to my lease...
I'm here for at least the length of a years lease & other than this traffic noise problem I love the place!!!
I've thought about asking if there is another Apt, further away from the street that is empty & I could switch into, but I would guess there would be some kind of ridiculous charge to do that, plus moving all my shit again. I'm gonna ask next time I'm paying rent!

Sorry that was such a long explanation...

SWIM already had this problem.. Indeed earplugs makes the whole thing pretty crazy haha. Much better in silent place, at most with little night crickets making their sounds :D

The solution SWIM found was to just not smoke in his house, and smoke it more rarely, when he went camping or somewhere in nature.

sorry if can't help much :(

I actually do it pretty rarely too, but it fluctuates, at most maybe once a week, other times it will be months between experiences. Kind of depends on whats going on elsewhere in my life...

I wish I had more opportunities to get out of the city, it has been a long time!
I sooooooo love the silence of the desert, or forest at night. Everything is a natural occurrence with the sound of life behind it. Not so much noise, which is repetitive & mechanical, even when the noise itself changes constantly!
One soothes the mind, the other grates on it like nails on a chalkboard, even when you don't notice it in the foreground!!

have you considered noise canceling headphones? They tend to do wonders. Not very cheap however.
It has crossed my mind, although like you said, the ones that actually work are quite expensive!!
Also, they would probably need to be very tight to make a seal around the ears. We have some sealed "drummer" headphones (not noise-canceling, just sealed) at one of the studios I freelance at, & they are effectively silent, but uncomfortably tight!!
I know the noise-canceling phones use phase cancellation to do what they do, so maybe they would be better. Have not ever wore a quality set of actual noise-canceling headphones.

Thanks!!

If you have the resources you can build a sound chamber. They work well I experienced one in the army and I built one later at home for sensory deprivation research. It's essentially a box made of plywood with layers of foam on the inside 4-6" deep. If it seals well it's almost completely soundproof. The key is getting the right foam which I got at guitar center.

why not just go out into nature? seems the best solution.
That would be great, but when you run a freelance business based around your various clients schedules & deadlines, that is much easier said then done!!
Its definitely not something I can do on a whim, 2-3 hour drive to get out of the city and all.
So lets say that's not a practical option...

I am planing a camping trip for later this spring when it warms up a little more. but that will probably be a dedicated Ayahuasca "session". A little more extended soul searching if you will.

The isolation tank is another thing I've thought about (dreamed of...), could you give a bit more detail on the DIY one you made.
How did you deal with the low frequency vibrations below say 90-160Hz (the ones you start to feel more) that go right through that foam?
How thick was the wood you made it from?
What kind of rough Dimensions did it have on the inside & outside?

The coffin effect creeps me out a little, I get claustrophobic easily sometimes!!
I used to have a nice home studio that was perfectly silent & sound proofed from outside, it was so cool to go in there with just a candle & some spice and spend some time in space!!
With the lights out there was also total darkness, there was no difference between having your eyes open or closed!! That can really play tricks on where you feel you body is, in relationship to your "mind" when laying down & drifting in & out of DMT-space with an MAOI tea to help mellow & extend the flow...
God I miss that perfectly quiet, dark room!!!

Thanks again!
