Has anyone else ever looked at one of Salvador Dali's pieces and immediately thought that he must have experimented with 'the molecule'??..... if you aren't familiar look him up on google images, im convinced haha

ps. my avatar picture is one of his works, im pretty convinced

Salvador Dali definitely has that psychedelic touch to his work - surrealist, indeed. Just by the titles alone you get the idea that he's had some experience with psychoactives :p

Really awesome stuff :)

Dali famously said "I don't do drugs, I am drugs"

but then he is also credited with "Everyone should eat hashish, but only once"

So who knows, my money goes on him taking drugs. Evidently hash, but quite possibly something a little stronger... Either way, a legendary artist, love his work.

*edit* more quotes Salvador Dali Quotes - BrainyQuote

Take me, I am the drug; take me, I am hallucinogenic.
Salvador Dali

Ok, he must have some experience with something a little stronger than hash lol

I just like this next quote, nothing to do with drugs:

The first man to compare the cheeks of a young woman to a rose was obviously a poet; the first to repeat it was possibly an idiot.

yeah i will say that dmt is probably a stretch but for sure that man had some expirience, he has definitely jumped to the top of my list as far as historical figures i would like to trip with.... i love his works and those quotes are great, ive never seen or heard those before.... " I am drugs" my next answer to anyone asking me if i do drugs lol should get a pretty good rise out of my parents :d

I think a lot of people can find it somewhat surprising or disbelieving when there's somebody who created something so crazy/outlandish/out-there that they can't imagine the creator not doing drugs. There are some people who are genuinely just extremely creative, but when a lot of us take drugs, it can (temporarily or otherwise) elevate our minds to view or create abstractions that would be otherwise reserved for a small class of visionaries.

An example that sticks out in my mind is the musician Sun Ra. He created this entire mythos about himself and his music involving lots of imagery (linguistically, musically, visually) that is extremely trippy and out-there. Back in college I was taking a jazz history course of sorts, and there were a handful of people who refused to believe that his work could've been inspired by anything less than drugs. Sun Ra did not do drugs and this was pre-psychedelia. There are some who simply don't need drugs to envision a sort of cosmic beauty.

Im not saying that i refuse to believe that he didnt do drugs, if a dali enthusiast or studier were to tell me that he definitively did not do drugs i would 100% believe it.... most definitely there are those of us whose minds on a regular non influenced basis are just elevated to "see" things like that... incredible if you ask me, wish i could talk to the man seeing as his creativity and eccentric nature most definitely does not stop with his art, just one of those people who sees things differently it would be amazing to have a window into that kind of thought

I'm sorry, I wasn't necessarily directing this at anyone in this thread, the whole topic simply spurred that thought in my head that I felt I needed to get out :d

Also, thanks for sharing the Sun Ra track Spes. I never heard that one, but enjoyed it a lot.

Actually, as a lifelong fan of Dali (My father was a fan and we had prints and lithographs of his works around the house) I have read many biographies of his, and I can say that it is well known that he was one of the artists and musicians who were given LSD to test well before it became a social phenomenon.

Plenty of other trippers sought him out and his famous parties in Spain... including the also phenomenal LSD inspired artist Mati Klarwein. (Austrian most famous for the trippier album covers of the late 60's and early 70's like Miles Davis' Bitches Brew and Santana's Abraxas)

The fact of his LSD use is not debated and he never denied it. However, I must say that he was painting and sculpting some seriously trippy ass shit BEFORE he got a hold of Lysergic Acid. He didn't need drugs... as he said he was the drug. But he certainly didn't abstain from them either.

One of my favorite Dali works is probably one of his least visually "trippy", but I think its his most profound. It was really powerful to look at on both LSD and 2ce.

"The Average Bureaucrat"
Dali painted it in 1930... it seems like one of those things that just gets truer and more relevant with time.

Wow. I never really liked art, as in the whole enterprise currently going called "art", but I do need to get myself a couple of Dali's paintings. Even though I've heard of the artist before, this is actually the first time I recall seeing a couple of his works and I can say I'm struck, as well.

Thanks for bringing this up, physic~explorer!

It can be so so easy to write things off... I'll agree that the concept of art today, at least in consumer culture, is largely a predefined market construct.... but thats just the concept you see on your television. Art is the product of the human mind, it is creativity manifest.

I used to be bored with visual art, as well. But I've got a suggestion: the next day you have free, or off, go to a local museum (if one is near to you). Maybe smoke up first, or eat some mushrooms, or maybe (my suggestion) just go sober. Actually look at the pieces. Some you are still not going to like. Of course. But try to strip away your preconceived notions. It can be really inspiring.

Bless.

I also look at parts of history and wonder if drugs played a apart in it most diffently would like to know if the ancient egyptians used drugs or were visited by other forms of life

Hehe...I know exactly what you mean, as I recently did this and it was indeed a fascinating experience. I went to the Van Gogh museum, since I was visiting Amsterdam with a couple of friends some weeks back and had an amazing time just by looking at the pictures; of course, some looked dull and unattractive, as you mentioned, but there were just so many works that this didn't even matter. It took us a good 3 hours to take it all in, but I'm glad we did. I highly suggest this to everyone else, as well.

I used to be a pretty avid advocate of the concept that the basic holy texts that emerged from the Middle East (i.e. Old Testament, New Testament, Quar'an) were the end result of someone's unique experience with an entheogenic plant. Hehe... his mind was blown, but out of a basic human desire for control he spread his tales without also telling of what prompted them... or maybe he didn't even realize it. He might have just consumed something, had the visions, and never connected the two.

I think there are many, many, events and beliefs throughout history that were more connected to otherspace than we might think.
