Sore Throat from A/B ??

Migrated topic.

The last 3 times swim did an A/B extraction when the root is simmering in water mixed with hydrochloric acid he ended up with a sore throat and stuffy nose the next day and it last for a couple days. Almost like being sick. Swim thought he had good ventilation. Open doors, windows, fan above stove and fans blowing in the room to keep circulation. Do you think it is the fumes from the acidic water boiling causing it even though there is proper ventilation? Do you think he should invest in a good fume mask? Or could it be something else and he may just be having some kind of reaction to a certain chemical? He has no known allergies.

Thanks for any tips.

Cooking it doesn't usually cause problems but the extraction itself can cause that, but in time this seems to fade as you get used to the fumes.

There's no point in using hydrochloric acid. The vapors of it are very irritating, plus I doubt your hydrochloric acid is food grade, so there's possibly some health issues as well. Who knows what horrible toxins are present in technical grade chemicals. You should always use food grade whenever possible. The fumes alone from hydrochloric acid are strong enough to cause some metals to rust.

Vinegar is dilute food grade acetic acid. Vinegar is actually better (unless you're using DCM as the non-polar solvent because DMT acetate is soluble in DCM). DMT acetate is more water soluble than DMT HCl, so more will come out of the bark with less water. The fumes form vinegar are far less irritating than the fumes from hydrochloric acid.

I went for the HCL because it was cheaper. How much vinegar is needed. Just a few drops like HCL or do you need like half an oz for each gallon of water?

SWIM was bothered by the hcl fumes from drying mesc. He didn't think that there should be enough there to be of concern but there was. Dried in the oven @190 deg. with his nose in the oven watching!! Now he'll use vinegar instead.

Here's a good tip if you want the hydrochloride which is easier to clean up. Use vinegar for the extraction. Then after it's all dried, pour just enough HCl on it to convert it to mescaline HCl. Then dry it again. The vinegar will free up and vaporize away. With such a tiny amount of HCl, it won't bother you while it's drying. Then you can clean it up really nicely with two acetone washes followed by 1 99% IPA wash to get pure white odorless mescaline. That's, if that's your desire. Some people prefer it that way; others prefer taking all the alkaloids together. The alkaloids you can wash off mescaline HCl with the acetone and IPA are active and should be saved. Mescaline isn't the only active alkaloid in cactus.

Wow that is brilliant; I'll have to remember that next time I am trying my non-spice extracts.

Thanks a lot ron!
