South-Eastern European plants

Hello, I'm new here. I live in South-Eastern Europe, somewhere in the Pannonian Basin. I was interested in finding out if there's a list of plants that grow in Europe and specifically in Hungary, Romania, Serbia and Croatia that are safe to use for extraction and that contain DMT at all. I've only heard of Phragmites Australis but I've also read that it contains some dangerous alkali which are not as simple to extract out of the end product. I would sincerely appreciate the support in this quest and an answer.

I'd consider Phalaris to be a reliable source of 5-MeO-DMT at this point. My patch is yielding around 100 mg per square foot per month outdoors, or I've grown material indoors that's 5x as strong (but the growth rate may be slower, not sure). The extraction is more work than MHRB, cactus, etc., but still feasible with basic equipment. The extract is usually consumed as the crude resin, but at least three people have independently crystallized 5-MeO-DMT from Phalaris.

DMT is still a research project, though. 5-MeO-DMT is toxic enough that most impurities are safer per unit weight, so that incomplete purification or unexpected variation in the natural alkaloid profile will result in disappointment rather than poisoning. That's not true for DMT and multiple people have reported serious incidents, especially in combination with harmalas. I think there's promise, but I'd want pretty long experience before I took ayahuasca from allegedly DMT-dominant Phalaris.

I sampled a leaf from a natural stand of Phragmites australis. It had a peak at the same RT as DMT, but the largest other peak was ~50x as big by UV fluorescence area, not too promising. I understand it's usually extracted from the rhizome and not leaf, but I've never sampled the rhizome.

So it's a pretty bleak DMT time for SE Europe huh...

There's no easy path yet, but that means it's a great time for explorers. I don't want to understate the potential danger of Phalaris, but I shouldn't overstate it either. If you approach every batch of extract with due caution (without harmalas, by smoking for fast onset, starting at low dose and increasing slowly, with another person present to provide care if needed), then I don't think the danger is worse than motorcycling or fixing the roof. DMT-dominant named clones are available commercially where I am, though I don't know about SE Europe.

If the extract has been analyzed, then the danger should be very small. A professional lab test is ideal, and may be obtained anonymously. TLC isn't conclusive, but it's feasible at home and enough to reject most unpromising samples.

Many other taxa are reported to contain DMT--see, for example, Trout's Some Simple Tryptamines. I'm growing some Lespedeza bicolor now myself, with limited expectations but I enjoy scratching off the lottery ticket.
