Spice smells of Naptha 5 hours later

SWIM has done his first extraction MHRB

Got a good amount of spice,

SWIM used Aspen4 as the closest to naptha SWIM could find round here http://www.aspen.se/Files/PDF/sakerhetsdatablad/UK/Aspen 4 EN.pdf

Extraction worked no probs, good yeild of light yellow crystals.

so all seems good, but they still smell of naptha! SWIM has chopped em a bit and shook them about quite a lot but they still smell of naptha!

I was wondering what SWIM could do to clean them up, SWIM have IPA and Acetone here along with more Aspen4 naptha along with some clipper lighter fluid, but I don't know whats in SWIMs clipper lighter fluid!

Please help, SWIM have over a g of spice here looking at him, daring him, SWIM has never tried it before and SWIM wants to blast off.... but SWIMs spice still has solvents in it! and SWIM wouldn't dare smoke it when it smells of naphtha..... Help!

Naptha evaporates sloooooooowly.

Friends usually dissolve the spice in a minimal amount of IPA or acetone in a flat dish and let it evaporate overnight, then scrape up with a blade.

This also has the benefit of freeing any remaining naptha that may have been trapped inside the crystals.

A good rule with any solvent is to place a spoon full in a tablespoon that is very clean that has been cleaned with isopropyl alcohol and to let evaporate and then look in the spoon afterwards for residue. You want to do in low humidity or with air conditioning to prevent condensation. If there is a spot left behind its not good to use try windproof lighter fluid as thats very clean naptha usually. Bend handle spoon so it evaps in center of spoon. Your MSDS sheet worries me as benzene is a major carcinogen. Some very very low heat under glass or covering tray with a clean tshirt or lint free cotton cloth and putting out on a sunny day should evaporate most anything. However I went to Mexico this past year and crappy solvent never evaporated after a week, poor solvent can leave oils and even heavy metals behind. :!:

Thanks, well SWIM did and evap test with about 80ml in a wine glass and it fully evaporated with 0 residue! it did take about 24 hours to evap but it left no residue at all.

you are right about benzine being a carcinogen.

SWIM is going to purify the spice with some more naphtha (different source) then when freeze precipitated, SWIM will dissolve in IPA and let it evap, if it still smells SWIMS will either discard it or try to clean it up using some other method that SWIMS does not yet know of!

Also invest in a cheap fan from a charity shop...blowing cold air over a solvent/spice for 20+ minutes or more will evap it away very quickly...:thumb_up:
