Sunnyside naptha

So, I have been planning on doing my first extraction and have settled on using q21q21's TEK as my starting point. I am currently in the process of procuring the necessities, and in my recent trip to Tractor Supply Co. I found that the only naptha that they had was sunnyside (actually the only solvents that they had were sunnyside). I am currently evaporating a small unmeasured amount of the stuff to see if any impurities are left behind; however, a quick search led me to find such phrases as "unsavory" being applied to this particular brand. I read the MSDS, finding that benzene and toluene may be present in trace amounts...

Does anyone have experience with this brand of naptha? If so, have you found it to be too impure to be messed with, or is it ok to use if a later clean-up step is taken (I read something about an ammonia clean-up?)

A good idea would be to search "sunnyside naptha MSDS" in google and read the ingredients.

Then get a piece of glass and evaporate a small amount on it to make sure it doesn't leave any residue.

If the MSDS says it's just naptha, and the evap test doesn't leave any trace, it's fine to use.
 
Damn I was so worried because this is the brand of naptha I'm using and like yourself I'm doing the q21q21 tek. I'm in the middle of an extraction right now. Well after some searching around I found that there's more than a few people that say it's perfectly fine. My snow globe is in the freezer right now and those crystals look DAMN good... looks even better than the spice I was gifted earlier this year so I feel somewhat safe in proceeding with this brand (I will be posting an extraction thread complete with pictures once I do my final pulls).

I was feeling bad because I thought I had just wasted 500 grams of MHRB.... but here are a few links that might calm your nerves... it did mine. Worse case you could do an ammonia wash to clean the crystals as stated in one of these links

I already checked the msds on it, and it said there MAY BE trace amounts of toluene and benzene present. My question about that is, do toluene and benzene evaporate at the same rate/are they able to be discarded like the naptha when the time comes?

I'll check the evap tomorrow and if there is no residue, will proceed with the tek!
 
Toluene and benzene are both volatile and will evaporate. No worries there.

This brand has worked fine for me. I use their xylene and acetone also, but it isn't the best acetone. I use duda acetone mostly.

AluminumFoilRobots, no problem my fellow psychonaut... soon as I seen your thread I had to investigate myself. 8) I'm telling you though... my crystals are looking REALLY good man... and this stuff didn't leave any kind of residue. The end product from my first pull is some of the fluffiest, whitest, purest looking spice I have ever seen... can't wait to post my extraction thread! Oh and I see in your sig that you are a Kratom user... I have a bit of it in powdered form and I was wondering what would be a good application of use.... :)

@Psychonaut In Orbit: Well, yes I am a kratom user - however as my sig says I have been increasingly irresponsible with my use of the herb and I have developed a physical addiction; I am now taking a long break from the stuff, replacing it with Kava-kava and Kanna for the time being. I have chronic and acute pain due to a spinal fusion procedure from a few years ago (due to SEVERE scoliosis), and that is the application that I was using the kratom for. The stuff was a godsend at first, but because of my irresponsible use of it I need to take a long break before I use it again...
But, the stuff IS nice, and fairly innocuous if you don't go as hard as I was going... just toss n' wash around 4 grams of the powder as a starting point and work your way up until you find yr sweet spot; HOWEVER! Don't take it more than once a week if you don't have chronic pain, more than that and you are setting yourself up for quasi-opioid withdrawals with strange SNRI-withdrawals also. The stuff is good for acute anxiety or depression, but cannot be used regularly or daily for this purpose - the W/D's are full of anxiety and depression!

Thanks for the reply and advice/precautions, AliminumFoilRobots. The kratom I got is a Idonesian strain... so I see it rather fitting that you have that in your avatar. :)

Sorry to hear your troubles friend but I'm glad you are strong to realize and that you have made changes to reduce/replace your troubles. Good luck and positive vibrations my friend! :)
 
Sunnyside is a brand to avoid. It contains heavy hydrocarbons that can cause issues and are harder to remove. It contains c8-c15 where as Klean Strip contains c5-c9. These heavier ones are neurotoxic. Repeated exposure can become cumulative. If using Naptha use Klean Strip. Best option would be to use Bestine. Bestine is Heptane. You can get it at art stores or on Amazon. If being cost effective is priority, then use klean strip to do the extraction and Bestine to recrystalize.
