Switching bases

SWIM did Q21Q21 lime tek using xylene, has not yielded anything yet. Bark is from a good source.
Swim is giving it time to hopefully freebase more, otherwise can anyone see any harm in simply adding water and lye and go to a traditional wet tek?
SWIM realises there will be the bark in there still, along with the lime. Could that pose any issues?
He is beginning to be apprehensive on the quality of the lime, though it is horticultural lime. Not dolomite.
He is also running out of it, and there is a substantial amount in there already.

I too am having issues with q21q21 tek (you commented in my thread). Since im using good MHRBP and my other materials should work (using Ronsonal lighter fluid) I'm going to assume It's the base. I picked up a 10 kg bag of gardening lime from a hardware store and am convinced that this is my problem.

I was wondering if I could just add more lime to the mix like 1g lime to 1 g of MHRB or even 2g lime to 1 g MHRB. Can you add too much lime? If this just doesn't cut it I'm inclined to try and get some lye. If i understand the process correctly I don't think adding a different base would make a difference, you just need the ph to be high (somewhere in the 13 range although I'm not sure if you make it more basic if it will affect anything).

lol so this would explain the utter lack of crystals in my freezer!

Well it's good to know what I need, if only Canada had some pickling lime. If I find any I'll post it. In the meantime I intend to get ahold of lye.

When doing Q21Q21 tek should I add the same amount of lye as he adds lime? If not could someone post some measurements on the correct amount of lye to add.

Thanks

Guys - q21 q21 is canadian, so theres gotta be lime here... Maybe PM him? Betcha walmart's got it...

JBArk

don't think it does.

Home hardware was the only place SWIM could find it. There are dozens of places online to order it though.
If the lime is nice, then you will see spice!

But apparently agricultural/horticultural lime can be calcium carbonate which is about the same solubility in water as calcium hydroxide but will only bring the PH slightly over 8 instead of over 11 like lime.

If you can't find it locally, flowing visions carries it.

I think it was like around $5 for 454g (1 lb.) at wal-mart....here in the states.

At flowing visions it's $3.39 for 200g or $1.79 for 100g, plus your shipping charges. I'd say that's not terrible if you really want to use lime over lye. Maybe try that while you look around for a source locally.

SWIM gets his in 200g bags from home hardware, they say it's "hydrated lime" and no one likes to buy it in huge bags so they package it.

Just ask them if it is calcium hydroxide, i guess
