Syrian Rue Harmala Re-x Pictorial

This is a pictorial/tek for re-xing crude harmalas obtained through an a/b extraction of rue seeds.

Thanks to the Nexus wiki and chat, i got some good info on how to purify harmala freebase using cheap materials.

supplies needed:

-vinegar
-baking soda
-funnel
-coffee filters


heres the rundown:

-I used 1.38 grams of crude extract for this run and put it in a 250ml flask and added ~100 mls of vinegar.

-Swirl the vinegar until you dissolve most of the harmalas, then let sit until all of the crap sinks to the bottom. then clean it up by pouring through a coffee filter.

this is what i got out

heres a before and after shot (notice how dark it is in the first pic, sorry i didnt put it up to the light)

-I then took a plateful of baking soda ( just pour and spread around) and baked it in the oven and 420 degrees Fahrenheit for two hours. before you bake baking soda, it is known as sodium bicarbonate when you bake it, you change it, and it is now sodium carbonate(you can do this beforehand if you'd prefer just keep in an airtight container)

-I then measured 200 ml of water and put 3 1/4 tablespoons of the now sodium carbonate, into the water and then let it dissolve completely. i tried to put just enough so you dont have to filter out excess sodium carbonate.

now for the fun part i have to say, i didnt expect this to happen, i forgot that baking soda and vinegar = fizzy mess lol

side by side, the sodium carbonate and filtered vinegar solution.

When you add the two, do it slowly

let is settle down then add more

when i added it for the 4th time, it sank to the bottom to make this

then i swirled it and let it settle down for a bit in the fridge. this is what it looked like when i took it out

if you filter off the top layer carefully, it will go nice and fast, i dont recommend syphoning off the top there are loose x-tal in the solution.

i used two filters and only took me 5< min

one filter for the top part and the other for the x-tal filled part.

this is the result

the final weight was .6

im very pleased with the results

There is a thread at Nexus » OTHER ENTHEOGENS » Harmalas >> russian olive status? that would be helped with a link to this thread (I can't post to that area; how annoying).

Anyway, if I understand correctly, that thread is exploring extractions of root, bark, leaves and everything except the seeds, where the highest (and only?) concentration is found (in the highest concentration of all analogues, I believe).

If that thread could be guided to wait for fall when Peganum Harmala goes to seed, they might save quite a lot of time and headaches.

Also, as a reminder, Peganum Harmala is AKA African Rue, Syrian Rue, Wild Rue, Harmal, and about a half dozen other popular names.

TL/DR; other thread: wait for the Peganum Harmala to go to seed.

I do have once question about your procedure (total noob here):

In your first slide you say"

Is that ground seeds? or what exactly is that extraction process?

Very nice job. You can purify even further by re-acidifiying, then basing again. Also, setting the finished product in a coffee filter and running cold water through them will help remove trace amounts of sodium carbonate leftover. You could also base with sodium bicarbonate instead to isolate harmine. Or convert it to Hcl salt form. Lots of possibilities with harmalas.8)

thanks everyone i was hoping i did everything right

@ heavenlypursuit - thanks for the tips, i was wondering how to isolate the harmine, i love messing around with alkaloids, making crystals and whatnot, so making harmine crystals was one of my goals.

@ casper the crude extract was what i got from boiling rue seeds in acidic water,boiled and collected 3x, and added concentrated non-ionized salt water to the tea. then i let it settle and filtered to get the 1.38 of alks and crud.

sorry if that confused you, but do some reading in the wiki about rue or harmalas and youll get a grasp on what im talking about.

Check the harmala guide for separation and further purification instructions, you seem to have done something similar. Each time you redissolve the harmalas, filter the liquid thoroughly to remove undissolved impurities.
